Today, President Obama wondered why no American women were on our US paper currency and coinage..........Perhaps there are a few of you that can correct his erroneous statement.

Off the top of my head I can say SBA and Sacagaewas for circulating coinage, and on the old ones are the Draped Bust and Peace dollars. Does a Martha Washington coin exist too?

I remember seeing a pattern Martha Washington coin. For circulating 2014 coinage no there is no women portrayed. The Native American dollar is NIFC.

While real women have been used for the allegorical representations of Liberty on our coins I would not count those as "women on out coins or paper money". If you stick with images that are supposed to show REAL women you have Queen Isabella on the commemorative quarter, Helen Keller on the Alabama State Quarter, Susan B Anthony on the dollar, and Sacagawea on the dollar. On paper money I think there is only one, Martha Washington on the back of the 1886 silver certificate and 1896 Educational one dollar note.

It wasn't today; it was Wednesday, in his Kansas City speech. And he didn't wonder "why no American women were on our US paper currency and coinage." He was referring to a letter he received from a "young girl" with a list of women she thought should be on the currency. I suppose he should have written back, saying, "What! You ignorant little cow! Susan B Anthony and Sacagawea are already on the wildly successful dollar coins that you spend every day!"

That's why "education is the key." I believe they only teach pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters at school. Most of them wouldn't know that halves and dollar coins even exist.

I think he's just trying to gain more votes in the area of non-educated women and other sympathizers. Or else, why wouldn't the white house have someone on staff to correct him in such statements about the country he leads? He effectively announced, then, that $1 coins do NOT circulate. I'd be surprised if he's ever seen a one dollar BILL not in the form of a napkin or cigar lighter. So what figures did the little girl think should be on currency? I think this just speaks to how unsuccessful the government has been in trying to implement dollar coins that the very government doesn't even know about it. Honestly, they should've made the dollar coin ONLY feature Gen. Washington to gain familiarity. Sacagewa, Susan B. Anthony, Lady Liberty, Peace dollar, basically everything before WWII. Maybe he's trying to say that the USA needs a female president so that one day she can be on the $5 or $10 bill.

The only three women on circulating US coins are SBA, Sac, and Helen Keller who appears on a State Quarter. Lady Liberty used to be, and then of course the first spouse series.

Interesting replies. The Presidents statements either came out of ignorance or his staffers just screwed-up. Obviously, we as coin collectors, immediately knew that Sacagawea is currently on our $1 coin and Susan B Anthony was on it from 1979-1999. The cent through half dollar is reserved for past Presidents. Our original coinage, starting in 1795, had Ann Willing Bingham on the Half Cent through dollar: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draped_BustIn 1878, the school teacher, Anna Willess Williams posed for the dollar coin. She later lost her job for doing so: http://www.countygenweb.com/txmontg...n_dollar.htmAs was previously noted, Martha Washington was on our US paper currency in the 1800's. Obama was referring to currently circulating coins when he replied to some child's letter, but, he apparently was just ignorant to the Sacagawea dollar coins. Hopefully he'll stop talking about coins and other things he knows nothing about.

Joe2007, you are so correct. Our forefathers believed that no person should ever grace our coinage, unlike in England. President Washington believed that no man was better than any other and he vehemently fought against being put on our coinage. He certainly would be appalled to see himself and other presidents being portrayed on our currency. We betrayed our forefathers wishes in 1909.

I wonder how anyone in the entire USA would not know of women on coins. Our president surely must have used coins in his past. Or was he brought up never using coins? I suspect he made such a statement to get people to respond or reply in some way. Almost sounds like a publicity stunt.

Oh please! He was making a speech, not a documentary for the History Channel. He was trying to spur political and civic interest among young women. Of course he was talking about currently minted coins (for circulation) I am sure his intent was to make young girls dream about being the next George Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, or Lincoln. When he defends his Masters Thesis on the history of numismatics, I am sure he will chose his words and fact check better. By the way, the letter was only concerning "why there were no women on American bills, not coinage, and teh President concurred that it might be time. "And then she gave me like a long list of possible women to put on our dollar bills and quarters and stuff, which I thought was a pretty good idea," Obama said. He never said that there has never been any women on US coins and currency.
