I just discovered the Polish 2 Zloty commemorative series (starting in 1995). There are a lot of amazing designs in that series if you ask me. Is anyone here working on a set of those? Some years have 18 designs! http://www.coin-database.com/series...2-zloty.htmlThey are about the same size as the U.S. presidential series dollars. Edited by tkbslc 08/31/2014 01:03 am

Beautifully designed and imaginatively taking in numerous subjects.
I only have four of them so a long way to go!

I think they are interesting. The coin subjects are a wide range of topics, from military, to cultural, to royal, to natural. If they were US coins, I doubt I would get a full set, maybe just pick certain ones.

Some are very nicely designed. What I have always found odd about these special 2 złote pieces though is that their specifications did not match those of the regular 2 zł coins. In that sense I am happy that they discontinued these, and issue commemorative 5 zł coins now.

I wonder how accurate the pictures are. I've got one from 2000 for the change of millennium that looks nothing like the one pictured on the site. Although if that one does exist, it looks pretty cool to me.

In 200 there were two sets of "millennium commems". One focused on the birth of Jesus Christ and has the symbols of the four evangelists (2 and 10 zł); the other one features modern science and technology (2 and 200 zł). Both "twoers" are depicted on the page that the first post links to ...

The 2 zł I have is a bimetallic that alternates the year 2000 and 2001 depending on how you look at it. The one on the first posts' page called "The Year 2000 - the turn of millenniums" has a design I haven't seen before.
Edit...just saw it was a 200 zł. Sharp looking design.

In total from 1995-2014 (They stopped making them as of this year) There are 260 different designs to collect. Most of them commemorating an anniversary or important event in Polish history. I suggest collecting newest to oldest as the first 5 years are quite expensive.

I don't really like all the designs, so I can't see hitting all 260. That would be quite a collection!
I mostly like the medieval looking designs. I have a handful on order so we'll see what they look like and I'll decide if I want to go for more.

I like many of those designs--and the fact they're in many styles--not just the realistic renderings on our quarters.

Tkbslc - re: Quote: I have a handful on order Is there a site you'd recommend? I found only limited choices available online. I wouldn't mind adding a few to my collection, but I'd have to order them from here... Thanks

I just bought some on ebay from a couple sellers. I haven't received them yet so I don't really want to recommend the sellers yet. If you search for 2 zlote or 2zl coins in U.S. sellers on ebay, there are quite a few listings. There are a lot more and more designs available from Eastern European sellers quite readily, but shipping can be expensive unless you order a few to spread it out. And for a few coins some of the U.S. sellers who don't combine shipping will be more expensive than a euro seller who does combine.

That's correct, some of them are pretty interesting. I agree. I used to collect them to a degree until a few years back when I found they are not circulating in Poland, although they are legal tender. Only circulating commemorative coin is a bimetallic 5zl piece honoring Krakow's historical value, to the best of my knowledge, and released during summer 2014.

Right, as mentioned before, these bimetallic 5 złotych coins have replaced the "twoers". And unlike the old pieces, they have the same technical specifications as the circulation coins. The first issue in this "Discover Poland" series is about the end of the communist rule 25 years ago - see here (PDF, English). The 2 zł were closer to the US quarters in terms of face value (about 60 cents). The fivers (face value about $1.50) are a little more expensive but are likely to show up in everyday life. On the other hand, that also means the 2 złote coins are now a finished series. May be more interesting for some collectors ... Christian
