I'm a member of several buy/sell/swap coins groups on facebook, and a few weeks ago an ad caught my eye. It was for a 2012 set of Fabulous 15 coins, full set with Cherrywood box, all COA's except one that is missing, and the bonus Maple Leaf F-15 wristwatch. For anyone that knows this set it normally sells for between $1500.00-$1600.00. I had a brief discussion with the seller, he wanted to get $1200.00 out of the set. After a little haggling and a weeks wait I managed to get him down to $800.00, so when he agreed, I sent it over to him through paypal. Today the set arrived, and when I picked it up from the post office I noticed the box rattled. Got home and opened it and found this.... Here's my dilemma. He packaged the outside of the box well with bubble wrap and packing tape, but neglected to put any kind of packaging in the case to keep the coins secure, a simple oversight, but one that caused scratches on the coins and broke all the holders. I sent him a picture as well as a video of the unpackaging (I video every package I open, videos do not lie) but I'm struggling with a solution. Do I pursue a refund and send them back, or do I keep the coins knowing I got them half of market value and they are still worth more than I paid? Not sure why but I sure am struggling with this one. Any opinions are appreciated!

was the package insured? damaged coins, even at half price, are still damaged coins.

Tough call. I think you are certainly justified in asking for a refund but I would also understand if you decided to hold on to them. For me, it would all depend on how bad the scratches were and how hard it would be to find another set.

Well, the question is, what do you want to do? Then do that.
The seller clearly didn't package it correctly, and should be held accountable.
I would either send it back for a full refund, OR if I wanted to keep the coins, I would try and get the seller to refund the amount the coins were damaged. EX: If the coins lost half their value due to damage in shipping, I'd try and get a $400 refund.

Being that this was not on any auction site, or through here, you have little recourse, I am assuming you sent the money via paypal as a gift, which I believe you cannot get back.
I am sure you could mention that you will post on the FB page with videos and pictures of how you received the box, so if he is trying to sell/trade other items then this might make people think twice.
Hopefully he will do something, but really you got a really smoking deal on the set, hopefully the coins them selves are not damaged.

I did pay paypal, but not as a gift. I had him send me an invoice so we were both protected. There was tracking on the package but no insurance so that venue of recourse won't happen. He responded and seemed surprised at the damage. Mi explained to him the shipping box was in pristine condition, but the lack of padding between the lid of the case and the coins is where the damage occurred. I am just waiting for his response.
I have decided it was such a good deal I am going to keep it, two of the coins have rim dings, but they could be replaced. It is already catalogued and tucked away in the safe and not going anywhere. I'll judge by his response if I will go public on the facebook page I bought it. So far he's being reasonable so I'll keep you all posted.

Ask for a refund and don't buy from again.

See if he offers you a partial refund. If so, take it.
If not, send it back for a refund.
O, just keep it and don't buy from him again.
