I'm not usually intrigued by 1948s, but this one immediately caught my eye when it passed through my store this morning. What do you guys think?

I'm very impressed that you spotted it so quickly. I've shown this coin to a number of our customers and all of them believed it to be genuine until I pulled it out of the holder.
How do you know the maker so readily?

Upper serif is missing on the DEI on the obverse legend was the first thing I spotted... Also nickelsguy is a bit famous for his counterfeit knowledge - you might know him better as Mike Marshall. Mike is pretty quick on catching the counterfeits... shame that he is not as quick with catching the Walleye... Be sure to set aside a copy of the upcoming Charlton Standard release - the "variety section" this year is on counterfeit coins and their markers.

Is there another way to tell fakes without seeing the die markers? I don't really see what's wrong with this one otherwise.

I thought that was Mike... but I forgot his "tag name"...
He also put out a good CD that had pictures of all the fakes....

I'm not too familiar with counterfeit coins. But does the fact that there's no mint mark (or whatever that mark is) on the bottom left side of the canoe count? Or is that mark there but "warn out" from the grade of this coin?

That missing mark under the back of the canoe are the letters"EH" for Emanuel Hahn, the artist who designed the reverse. Being near the edge and countersunk into the dollar, it would not get worn off. Also the shape of the 8 in 1948 is all wrong.

There are numerous things wrong with the actual effigy and legends The easy marker is the double base of the second L of dollar. Like I said above, both Chinese manufacturers use the same dies with the same marker. I have been away from coins for 4 months with illness but am back. ebay and I are again at odds, I will beat them again as before.

Keep up the good work nickelsguy... Quote: Also the shape of the 8 in 1948 is all wrong. That's what I always look at, didn't know about the other markers.

I know I should be looking at spcific die markers, but didn't anyone suspect the coin to be counterfeit after seeing the picture for a few seconds?
Everything is 'off', including the portrait, numerals and letters and the overall graininess of the coin.
In my opinion, an extremely 'easy' fake to spot or should I say a 'textbook' example of what a Chinese-manufactured fake coin looks like.

It has an impression of "off" to me but I didn't know where to look. Thanks for the explanations guys.

Think of it as a bit of a detective story everybody. The entire 1948 dollar mintage was struck in a single week before Christmas in 1948. The coin was selling for a premium within a year or so because everyone knew it was a small mintage and hard to find. Therefore would ones spidy senses not get turned on when you see a low grade one ? I am willing to bet the average grade encountered for a 1948 Dollar is Choice Exf 45 - AU55 ,with some of those being cleaned. VF or less would rarely be encountered unless some one was dumb enough to have a pocket piece 1948! BTW I still need a G6 or worse for my low ball set!! Much rarer than a Choice one!

Jack - can you post photos of your lowball set? There is a lowball silver dollar collector here in Ottawa, who has a fantastic collection in ICCS flips. His 1948 is graded VG-8.... he is still hunting for an equally hard coin, the 1947 ML...
