Picked this up at Scottsdale USMEXNA silent auction. I was afraid of these coins because they look so fake. But with the venue and Mike D. as the first bidder, thought it was safe. My wife thinks it is crappy but my collecting buddy and I spent like an hour looking at the coin and it is fascinating.

I know very little about war of independence coinage and would like to learn more. Is there a good reference?

Any help would be appreciated.

Don't know if it is PC in this forum but for your reference the cost was $180 USD.

I think it is a great pickup, I have always been fascinated by the early cast Chihuahua 8 Reales and the rest of the Royalist mints from that time period. Not many survivors left today and impossible to grade because they were of questionable condition to start with since they were castings.

Pick up the CD on the talk by Max Keech on WOI of the Mexican Coin Company. Go the MNA (not the MCC) site and then you can buy it. If you are a member see my Journal write-up in September 2013 on these pieces in the Library tab. That was a good price ($180). 1812 IMO is the most common year then 1811 and finally 1813.

Oops, I apologize, I read the original post as asking about a refernece regarding the war for independence, not specifically the coinage of the period. My bad. Still a worthwhile read, though.
