Trends is like MSRP. The M's SRP is usually a bit delusional. If any catalog of MSRP actually listed realized prices, it would cause a deflationary death spiral.
Certainly you can't expect CCN to publish lists of prices that undercut the dealers that pay for the advertising.

wow... something is wrong in Denmark! lucky me, as I purchased a considerable number of variety large cents there not too long ago. it appeared there was not a lot of knowledge in the store. I was led to believe that you were doing some of their grading. so, what is happening to their considerable Stock? I believe the tennis player guy owned or owns most of it personally? Maybe YOU and I should take it over? lolololo You finance it and I run it....lololololo

Umm no ! I had the wonderful experience of a bricks and mortar operation for many years. I like doing it the way I do now lot more freedom and way less expenses. Not sure why or what went on at the end. As to knowledge, not sure ,but I can assure you I was not doing any grading for them.

https://goccf.com/t/189911#1753409https://goccf.com/t/189911#1753418Hi skip79 and tfred For your information look at this link. https://goccf.com/t/140377&whichpage=2Thanks for all of your comments about CoinsAndCanada.com. First, here's a brief history of it. I started collecting circulating coins 10 years ago when I saw my father's "old" coins (from 1940 to 1960) sticked in a ring notebook. Like several beginners and novice, I tried to find all the coins for each year/denomination. When I saw that there were a lot of obverse for 1992, 1999 and 2000 25-cents, I bought my first numismatic book (Charlton) to help me with my new hobby. In 2005, after having abandoned my incomplete collection for a few years, I started to look for more information surfing the Web about the history of my coins, the production process,... I found a lot about US coins, but not much for Canada. Disappointed, I created in July, 2005 Numicanada.com to help people like me, a rookie collector. With the tremendous help of several who have discovered Numicanada, the website has grown over the years with always more informative content. In 2008 (three years later), the "English version" of Numicanada appears (CoinsAndCanada) with the same goal: sharing information and knowledge on canadian numismatic in an accessible way.

Thanks for sharing, castor. This is indeed very informative.
In light of this freshly (re)surfaced info, why is it a dedicated enthusiast can dedicate time, effort, and energy to compile and update a rather thorough database on his own, in his spare time, which IMO is more meaningful; yet CCN, which is paid (in part) to provide such information management, simply can't/won't/doesn't maintain current market trends in its official publication?
Don't get me wrong, I agree with the other sentiments expressed by many in this thread about researching broader resources collectively, rather than exclusively relying on any one. But when people routinely speak in terms of trend, or items selling as a % of trend, it's pretty clear which resource is dominantly relied upon in the industry, especially by dealers and auctioneers (for obvious reasons).
Any newspaper, regardless of content or target audience, has a responsibility to report factual and current info, and exercise careful due diligence in the validation of their information before reporting it. Considering how the information contained in Trends is compiled, maintained, and reported, I don't see how CCN is properly discharging its obligations to its readers by allowing market insiders to control and report false/artificial market info as a market trend under CCN's publication.
Personally, in light of all this info, I'm more inclined to boycott CCN entirely and support the CoinsandCanada.com site by clicking on banner ads as a way of demonstrating my appreciation for the work that the site owner is voluntarily doing for the benefit of the hobby; something CCN should've been doing with Trends in the first place, but isn't. I'd highly encourage everyone here to do the same. Frankly, I'd be prepared to pay a subscription fee to CoinsandCanada.com if it meant better access to actual market price indexes.

When I first started getting into coins and I bought a trends paper...
I then went to an auction and picked up some coins that I thought were interesting and I liked... I used the trends as my guide... It was only shortly there after that I had learned that for most coins trends is an inflated price and for most coins in common condition that aren't exceptional pieces you could probably find a discount somewhere.
Sure that was a learning lesson... but wow.. how that one very point could dissuade a newcomer to this hobby. I understand that the Charlton may be off as it's written almost 6 months prior to printing to make deadlines... but a paper can have some VERY up to date information...
So I too feel this is one area that CCN falls short. Their prices aren't accurate... now some may say that it's the dealers that submit current prices to CCN and that dealers are putting down the price points so as to minimize any losses in sales... I say that's conspiracy rubbish... I feel there's enough sources of information available that trends could be very current and accurate with a few cross references.. I also would like to think better of most dealers.. it doesn't serve them to see prices always rising or stagnant...
I like the CCN for the articles... I hate how from the last 4 issues I have at my house I can't from the top of my head think of one coin that I'm "tracking" has moved one way or another in price point...
There definetely is room for improvement.. that's for sure...
With respect to LightW4re... what that individual has done for this hobby... well I think the person should honestly get some sort of an award...I can't think of a day where I have been thinking about buying a coin and I haven't looked at that web site... and I can hardly think of a day where that website isn't referenced on this forum... and this individual provides all those resources for FREE...
This truely is an individual that is trying to build the hobby... and in a very altruistic fashion...

An interesting topic. I find it frustrating that Trends is not a true reflection of prices and wish there were a better reference guide for collectors that was user friendly. The fun I had as a youngster is no longer dominant in my pursuit of coins, I'm getting too blindsided by the "business" of it all and am putting it on the shelf for now.

There are many TPG coins selling at less than 50% of Trends on ebay. So those selling prices are not being taking into account for Trends. Definitely makes one wonder...

And there are lots more that are sold for far more. Not good to generalise based on trends. Good coins ALWAYS sell for more money ! Problem coins always sell for less. There are lots of coins that I as a dealer will pay WAY over fifty per cent for. As a few examples 1948 Canada 50 cents F12 (trends is $140 for certified ICCS or CCCS) send me all you have for $85.00 each and I will pay your postage as well. 1947 Pointed 7 Dollars MS63 trends is $2500 I will certainly pay a lot more than half trends . Now on the other hand lets take a 1970 nickel in Ms 63 or other common items that have cat values or trend values of a few dollars , you probably cant give that stuff away.
