In my years of collecting, I have only once sent off some Lincoln cents to be graded through NGC. As I recall, it was not worth it all. I think it was $18 a coin and then postage, insurance, etc. What I don't understand is that I buy coins all the time on ebay for less than $10 each. How is that possible? How can they possibly be making any money?

Can someone also tell me how they decide whether to have a coin slabbed or not? I admit that I do like seeing an official grade sometimes but I don't enjoy maintaining multiple albums for loose coins and then for slabs. Kind of a pain. Thoughts?

Never could figure out why so many coins are in slabs that are selling for less than $10. I've even seen coins worth $2 or $3 in a slab. Why people do this is just odd. Makes no CENTS.

Many times there is a large price gap in the difference of one grade... A MS65 might be worth $5 but a MS66 is worth $100... If someone bunch of that coin or a roll or something, they make their money on the 66's and take whatever they can get on the 65's

From what I understand, the third party graders can give discounted rates for bulk orders.

It gets less expensive with the more coins you submit to balance out the handling fees and postage. It also depends on the value of the coin; the more the stated value is, a higher tier is required which has a higher price attached to it.

Some people just like seeing their entire collection in slabs. Maybe they were pursuing a modern registry set, and they didn't get the grades they wanted...

I am one of those people... shrug, it is still cheaper than 18 holes of golf - now that is a hobby with diminishing returns!!

This is EXACTLY what is done in the bullion world.. people will buy monster boxes of eagles and choice pick out a few... the 69's don't really pay off but the 70's get one heck of a premium!

Awhile ago ICCS had a special $8 per coin if you submit more than $100 coins...

My buddy took advantage of this offer.. but he had only approx 80 coins that were "worth" submitting... but by paying for an extra 20 coins that were all high grade just not worth a whole heck of a lot even in such high grades... he saved himself a lot of money..

$18 for regular submission x 80 = 144

$8 for x 100 = $80...

So there is discounts on volume... and if you have enough of one type... sometimes the lower grades don't pay but the one or two in a large batch that are top grade will more than pay for the rest.

Absolutely correct, and the business of bulk submissions is huge! I know some dealers that spend six figures every month in submission fees. Some of the really big deals can get slabbed for free (like an auction company wanting to get the coins from a well known provenance collection, like Newman, Green, Garrett, Elliasberg, etc.) Others pay a very small fee for builk submissions if only coins that meet a certain grade are slabbed, ie: bag of 1000 Morgans slab only MS64 or better, a dealer might pay $2-3 dollars per coin and $5 for slabbed coins.

Amanda Varner of Alhambra coins posted a cool shot on one of her recent blog posts of a dealer sending off Priority mail boxes to be graded after a major show, there were well over 100 boxes!What-Is-The-Real-Cost-Of-Having-A-Coin-Graded-And-Slabbed?
