I received my Canadian Coin News... I suspect, given how the article is written, that the auctioneer is doing a really good job at creating hype and promoting the auction...

After reading with great interest the CCN article on the G F Landon collection it appears that this is no fluke of a find. The auction will probably have some wonderful and some not so wonderful stuff in it. But I am sure there will be drool all over my Catalogue when Chuck Moore sends it sometimes before the February auction. A little digging and I was able to research the following........ GF Landon was a prominent early Winnipeg citizen starting a building and carpentry business at 236 Front Street in 1881 his phone number was 172. In Donald Stewarts excellent work on the tokens of Manitoba there is a brass numismatic calling card attributed to Landon (cat#8460a). One was apparently sold in Bells sale late last year Toronto Coin Expo ( October 2013). Landon was assuredly an early dealer in rare coins as well as his normal course of business. Researching early American Numismatic Association Journals (March 1899) I came up with the following. "Wanted Canadian Copper Coins in good condition dated before 1880. GF LANDON BOX 684 Winnipeg Manitoba Canada". Obviously he was an early Canadian member of the American Numismatic Association. It appears that Mr. Landon lived from 1849 - 1918 and died in Winnipeg and is buried in the city. What a neat auction this should be and good luck to Chuck Moore. Surely a feather in his cap !

Jack, keep in touch if you do decide to come to town. Perhaps we can finally meet face to face, and grab a pint sometime during the auction... (and you can bring your nickel dollar errors, of course!!)

I will have a few pints and discuss the ERROR of my ways! Would look forward to it Roger! I am sure that I will be able to pull this one off as I am going to be coming back from a couple of Coin shows in The UK and could just route through TO.

Looks like I'll have to start saving my pennies! It would be great history to own even a lower grade coin or two from this collection. It seems very historic. I've enjoyed the research provided on this collector. Where can a person get a catalog?

Contact the auctioneer and ask to be on their mailing list... I'm sure they would be happy to send you their material!

Thanks for the tip. Here's a pic of the token GF Landon issued, it was on an ancestory site. Seems like the guy was quite active in early Winnipeg.

I think more than active! I found further info from the 1899 ANA Numismatist , he was sponsored for membership by a couple of heavy hitters of the day who were dealers and or auctioneers of the time. Obviously Landon was at least what we would today call a "vest pocket " dealer.

Hey pacific, your finding more than what I could. It looks like I'll have to subscribe to the CCN, if I want to read the article. I suppose it's the next logical step, in the progression into collecting. The collecting bug is certainly taking on a life of it's own. It's was so simple in the days of just pulling the odd coin, out of circulation and placing into a jar. I didn't agonize over condition/ handling etc!!
Now there's so many precautions and things too agonize over if I'm doing it right - in taking proper care of the coin!!
I'm going to need a tutor, so I can learn how to calculate a bid that includes all the extra fees. I can see a person could get into some financial trouble, if not doing correct calculations. I've no experience with that type of auction. I'm going to be watching tonight's Canadian coin auction. Hopefully I will learn something.
Anyone bidding or attending tonights auction?
