I am cataloging a recently inherited coin collection for my mother in law. I found this coin and a lot of info on the Internet about fakes and forgeries. I'm no expert but I'm excited to learn more! The coloration seems weird to me. Can anyone teach me anything? Thanks! Ps hope I figured out this image optimizer right!

Are you able to post clear images of the coin? Also, any chance you are able to weigh the coin?

Welcome! Sure looks like an original BB-241 variety. Can you show/tell us the edge decoration? Any way you could get a weight?

It actually has the color I would expect from a genuine early silver dollar. Dark, original patina is a very good thing--don't touch it, it's perfect.

Given that that could would be worth about $1200-2000 if genuine, I'd suggest sending it off to a company like PCGS or NGC for professional certification. That's the only way you'll get top dollar selling it, too.

Nice coin! This one looks real to me. Most of the old dollars people find and post here are recent Chinese counterfeits.
I would like to clarify: Do not in any way try to clean it or polish it or somehow try to make it look better! That is the surest way to destroy the value of this coin.
Good Luck!

Looks good from here and has a nice tone. However, if you want to be sure and learn more about early US dollars compare your example with those here: http://www.earlydollars.org/1802overview.htmA number of different varieties where struck in each year the Draped Bust dollar was struck.

It looks good to me. This coin is very expensive so it should be authenticated. You will get more money for it that way if you choose to sell it.

This looks like a normal close date to me, is that correct? I will try to find a protective case for it 😀

99.999% sure it's the real deal.
Very nice coin, very clean with no adjustment marks.
Needs to be third party graded for maximum value for selling.
As others have said....do not clean it to try and make it look better.

I have no doubts that's it's genuine. I'd send it to PCGS.

It looks a lot better than the one my buddy bought last year.... I knew right away it couldn't be ok. My buddy, however, thought he scored big (for around 4 hours).

Unless you plan to sell I don't see any reason to spend the time & money to send it to a grading company.

to the forum! A very nice coin and one of the better finds I've seen on this forum lately. I'd grade it low VF and it has great eye appeal. Exactly what a experienced collector would want.

Keeping or selling I would get it graded. A small investment compared to the value plus if you do ever need to sell in the future it will be much easier and profitable to do so plus you'll know for sure (or as close as possible) what you have.
