I am having trouble identifying a pillar style Spanish Cob. It has no date, but from what I've been able to research I THINK it's from the mid-1500's but I'm not sure. What is the best resource for coins like this as the normal Cats don't go before 1600. Thanks!

You got a very scarce not-salvaged Mexican 1 real, issued in Mexico under Carolus y Johana
This is the first type (which is very scarce) - dated around 1540/1550

Thanks so much! That is absolutely it. With that information I was able to find very similar examples and an accurate valuation.

Nice coin ame5057. That coin was probably struck in the palace of Hernan Cortes. (He had fallen out of favor and his palace in the center of Mexico City had been confiscated by the government.)

If you are going to be even a moderately serious collector of the early cobs you should be hunting for one of the references that covers the entire era of production. Las Monedas Españolas by Cayon or Numismatica Española by Calicó are reference books that cover all Spanish issues from Roman provincials to the present time. I prefer Cayon myself but that may just be a personal preference for the layout.

These books are not accurate price guides however. You need to realize that these are RARER coins and so can not expect to follow a price guide for realistic values.

swamperbob : Cayon is full of mistakes, Aureo is more up-to-date ;)

Regarding price guides, indeed, it's just a hint (particularly on more scarce issues) - correct prices can be found in recent auctions.
Usually, scarce continental stuffs don't sell for crazy price, and american ones get a nice premium - particularly Mexican coins :)

Chime in if you ever sell it (wherever it is), I'll check it out :)

swamperbob : sorry, the house name is Aureo & Calico. It's the one you know :)
It's my primary reference, and then I have more specialized catalogs for various aspects (ensayadores, potossi 8 reales / 1/2 reales and cartillos, mexican coins, colombian ones ... and so on)

I was wondering what type of error's you are referring to - omissions or non-existent types or what? I have both books but prefer the format Cayon uses. No special reason.

Less up-to-date, some miss-attribution (the Calico also have some for the early south-american reales), and some missing references.
It's not as terrible as the Krause though :P (which lists some non-existing dates for example)
Nothing to worry about - it's mostly a matter for preference :)
