Purchased this coin in an auction last week. The story is that this coin was graded by NGC, however the owner wanted to include it in his collection album so he took it out of the slab (you can't fix stupid!). Included with the auction was the original NGC label and the original purchase receipt. For the moment, I am not going to disclose what grade it received from NGC so as to not bias your opinion. What I would like to know is whether I should submit it to PCGS and what grade do you think it will get? Thank you in advance for your advice. P.S. Please see my later post on what grade it received from NGC. Also, any advice that you may have on the question I pose in that later post is much appreciated. Edited by accprof1 11/21/2014 2:23 pm

I agree with AU-55. Possibly some wear on Lincoln's head, and a fair number of contact marks. Wish I had one!

Nice looking coin. Quote: (you can't fix stupid!) A lot of collectors break out slabbed coins to put them in albums,"To Each Their Own." John1

Thank you everyone for your input, the consensus grade being AU 55. NGC graded it AU 58. Any advice as to how to proceed? NGC or PCGS? Would NGC even grade it the same as it did before? When I submit to PCGS, should I ask for a minimum grade? I am a relative new comer in the world of numismatic coins, so your input is much appreciated.

The GS may, or may not, assign it the grade it once was holdered at. Time and environment does funny things to coins.
IF it were mine I'd do a submission to ANACS first and at least get it back in a holder. If I were happy with the grade then I'd consider the crossover game.
Any way you look at it it is a nice coin.

I would submit to PCGS. It's a bit more pricey, but if you have any other coins to submit at the same time it cuts down the cost. PCGS will be the most desirable slab, and the 55 DD is one of the most famous US coins. Go for the best.

Thank you everyone for your advice. I have decided to send it to PCGS. Hoping for the best. Thanks again.
