So I got a Dansco 7070 and I am looking at filling it with "investment grade" coins. If you could put together a D-7070 to pass on through the ages that would carry value to your children's children, what would YOU fill it with? Any specific coins, grades, etc?

Thanks

OK, we'll preface this with the fact that "investment grade" for me means an absolute bare minimum of $1500 per coin or so, scaling up for gold and older issues. These are the recession-proof coins, the ones which folks with substantial discretionary income want for their collections.

Within that is a broader set of possible specializations than one might think. Value accrues due to issue rarity or lofty grade or scarce variety or preferably a combination of them, and enough different directions exist in this price range that a little research will allow you to collect things you like while being fiscally responsible.

Just don't plan on a competitive rate of return. Ain't happenin'. Prudence will give you solid places to park money and do better in the long term, but that's as far as it goes.

If they are investment quality I wouldn't buy a coin out of a slab, and neither would I take it out of the slab to place in a 7070. My 7070 is for coins that have issues already not for making issues.

I basically agree with Bertensgrad. If I wanted a really high quality or investment grade set, I'd probably stick with stabbed coins and leave them in the slabs. I chose to assemble my 7070 with mostly mid-grade coins, most of them purchased raw. I focused on eye appeal rather than ensuring everything was problem free.

I would have to agree. True "investment grade" coins should stay in the slabs. I have recently started one myself (Progress...15/86) and have bought some slabbed and some raw coins, but the slabbed ones I am just going to keep in the case and once I finish (if I finish) the album I will break them out then. The slabbed coins I have purchased have been because I don't always recognize a "problem free" coin and I know ebay sellers don't always disclose "issues" and I am going to try to put together a nice set. I am just putting an upside down coin in the slot for now on any slabbed coin I have to remind me I have that particular coin.
NICE photos and a VERY nice album KenKat~!

I bash those dang slabs and fish the guts out to put in its proper place. Keep the little inserts on the back page.

Raymo!! I plan to have a big get out of jail party all at once, and I will also keep the little "paper thingy" that comes with the slab on a laminate sheet in the back of the book.

Tjmdo...have you looked at a PCGS registry 7070 type set? I am thinking about going that route much later maybe. Seems to me that would be the answer to an investment grade type set.

Thanks guys for all of the insight! I am still trying to determine how I'm going to do it, but I'm thinking about the rarest coin in each series in an affordable circulated condition. I have looked into the registry sets as well.

Thanks again.
