This is a tough combination in the Indian cent series. Just thought I would share.

PCGS slabbed it as VF-30 late stage brockage. Not uncommon for the 3rd party grading services to get things wrong, especially on older certifications.

Okay, I'm just skeptical, but optimistic. Gotta have the facts. Nice coin though! Love it. Should carry a pretty premium.

My coin was struck by a capped die. In simple terms, a planchet stuck to the obverse die as a cap. This cap was then struck into a struck coin still in the collar and picked up the obverse design from that coin (it's now striking counter brockage images). The counter brockage part of my coin is evident by the Indian's head dress starting to merge into the rim area as well as images of the Indian's neck area. My guess is that the counter brockage is probably the 3rd strike or so. Shortly thereafter, the capped die was struck into the reverse die when a planchet was not in the collar causing the cap to pick up the reverse die image. (the capped die is now not only striking counter brockages, but is now striking clashed cap strikes as well) This is evident on my coin that shows the one cent, shield and left side of the wreath incused over top the counter brockage strike. I am sure I could have explained it better but hopefully it helped.

Put more succinctly: stuff banging on things it shouldn't bang on and Cents flying everywhere. A Mint barroom brawl, everybody slugging everyone.

I've always lusted over the 2$ capped die errors that Mike Beyers has offered over the years, but not at his six figure asking price, I've seen some much more affordable large cent capped dies but not many IHC before, that is one cool error coin!
