Maybe I'm crazy, but that looks like a PL to me!

I think MS65 is right on, a touch of chatter in the field in front of the face, other than that solid and if not for the slight chatter it would have a shot at MS66 or at least a + grade, PL? possibly, I would need to see in hand but it looks like it could go PL.

The 1878-S through 1881-S Morgan dollar issues were generally the most well-made of the entire series from San Francisco, and a nice Gem like this piece is an ample demonstration of that fact! San Francisco clearly had some mint workers who took pride in their newly designed product. Great-looking coin! Best Regards, George

VERY nice. Curiosity: If you want the VAM variety I assume you have to pay extra. ORDoes PCGS NOT do VAM's? How about NGC? I believe ANACS DOES do VAM's.

That one's going to be blinding in hand. Can't wait to attribute it - 65 is a place where ordinary VAMs start appearing on the radar of collecting specialists and it might be worth knowing.
PCGS and NGC attribute some VAMs, none very well. We've seen some pretty egregious errors in their slabs. ANACS attributes all VAMs and gets them all right, because their guy responsible for it is one of the greatest living VAMmers, John Roberts.

Quote: She's a beauty!! Do you mind me asking how much that cost? 1878-S is pretty available in MS65; I'd call $225 or better a pretty good price for one aside any potential variety value. This one shows excellent eye appeal as well, and buyers won't hesitate to go above the number I suggested for a really good 1878-S. The issue has a nice group of dedicated specialists.

Lovely example! Too bad the entire series didn't look like the early S mints.
