Peruvian Sol Rim Marks/Damage Question

johnny676767 Pillar of the Community United States 521 Posts	Posted 01/07/2015 12:08 am I have a few Peruvian sols and while looking at auctions I have noticed marks on the rims. It almost looks like the coin was fixed in a mount or was marked up shortly after or during minting. What are these? I am asking because the marks are very similar on different coins but always sols, at least that I have seen. Here is a link. Sap Moderator Australia 16859 Posts	Posted 01/07/2015 03:16 am You're referring to what appear to be deep, parallel scratches on the rim, most noticeable between 2 and 5 o'clock on the shield side? Those aren't mount-marks, they're adjustment marks. They're not PMD, nor an error, merely a distinctive feature of certain coinage series. They apparently used a rough file to trim the weight of slightly overweight coin blanks down to the standard. Adjustment marks are more common on older European coins; they can also be found on some pre-1840 American coins. This Chard Coins page mentions adjustment marks on Peruvian sol coins.
