I bought an 1814 Capped Bust Dime to put in my 7070. I was able to get one at a decent price as I didn't wanna break the bank. I was also able to apply my ebay bucks toward the purchase. I love the looks of a nicely worn coin and didn't mind that it has some issues. I went to put it in the album and it was too big for the hole. I finally got it in but it took some effort. It made me start thinking about a possible counterfeit so I thought I would post it here. It weighs 2.59. I know Dansco's are notorious for wrong size holes but I thought I would run it by you guys. Thanks...

I did find this tidbit on Wikipedia...

Quote:
Capped Bust dimes minted through 1828 are known as the Large type. This is partially because they were struck without a restraining collar, which gave them a broader appearance. In 1828, Chief Engraver William Kneass introduced the close collar method of coining (which automated the process of placing reeds on a coin's edge). In addition to standardizing the diameter of coins, the new method allowed the Mint to produce thicker coins. To maintain a standard weight and alloy, the diameter of most coins was reduced. In particular, the dime was reduced in diameter from 18.8 to 18.5 millimeters. This new Capped Bust dime, which began production in 1828, is known as the Small type. There are 123 varieties known of Capped Bust Dimes.

The diameter was reduced in 1828 and the Dansco album only accommodates the small size Bust Dimes. A similar situation exists for the Capped Bust quarters as well.

Check the reverse letters closely; I'm seeing little things that worry me but they might be the image - voids at the top and bottom of round letters, etc. Beyond that the diameter is no worry. It's partly the Dansco and partly the variability of diameter of this issue.

This was a large-size dime. The 7070 has a space for only the small-size bust dimes. Still need this type for my collection, though.

SuperSuper it's just my pics. I didn't realize the variation in size until I read it on line. Live and learn. My education continues...

I'm going to say this is likely JR-3 or JR-4

They share the same reverse which lacks a period after the C

It can't be JR-1 or JR-2 since those have the period; JR-5 has the StatesOf reverse.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes there are large and small size capped bust coins as the mint switched over from the old open collar coining methods to the newer closed collar methods in 1836. Interestingly enough, the early coins minted with open collars all varied in diameter due to the collar being open and allowing the coins to squeeze. This was discussed in an earlier article about capped bust half diameters.

I was able to grind down the coins edge all around with my Dremel. Fits fine now.

The old large cents seem to also have a fair degree of variability in them as well. I had to use shims to keep them from spinning around.

I have an 1821 Bust Dime and an 1825 Bust Quarter that I'd love to put into my 7070 if they would fit!
