Practically every 1983 P coin I've seen (other than Lincolns) looks like crap, even if 'uncirculated.' I have a 1983 P quarter out of a third party mint set that has all kinds of mint luster, but is struck so badly the bunch of arrows the eagle is standing on has no horizontal lines!
I think what you are seeing on this half are flow lines from a VERY OVERUSED die.

What makes this coin look like a VLDS versus a hit with a torch(or some sort of fire) or possibly acid? Just curious because the coin looks like there was some sort of clad melting going on with it.

I understand the VLDS but I am wondering about the globs at the temple and behind the ear that looks like the clad is running kinda. What would cause that besides the VLDS?

The temple area is abraided so much that the mid designs are flattening out. The deep design inside the die are still there that makes the rest of the devices. So the die that made your coin was tired and beaten up by over polishings.

Thanks for the responses I did look at many other of my 1983 coins and there are many that show some of the same wear, but this one is by far the worst. Is there any value at all for this end of the die line coin?
