Even though the Pres $1 are, in my opinion, numismatic abominations devoid of any artistic merit, the notion that discontinuing the program (especially this far into it) will save the government any substantial amount of money, is rather ridiculous. However, I'll applaud any effort that keeps Nixon's ugly mug off of US coinage.

Is that really the portrait they're using for JFK? Seems an odd choice for the "pretty boy" president.
But on the topic, this sounds like a rookie politician just trying to get his name out there.

Let the program die of natural causes. My grandsons will thank them.

Buy a clue, Senator David Vitter of Louisiana. The real problem is the one dollar note, which is the real waste of taxpayer money.

Someone should tell Senator Vitter that "working girls" will take Presidential dollar coins at par with paper currency.

ROFL how can the Senator be a rookie he's been in office since 2005 Let the program finish out and then stop it along with the Sacagawea dollar. Eliminate the paper dollar and FORCE the use of the billions in vaults. If and when the supply is critically low THEN strike more. My Two Cents on this. -MV

If I'm not mistaken the collector versions (and only versions available) of Pre$es and Sac$ and Kennedy half dollar$ are completely funded by us, the collectors. So how would eliminating that save (other) taxpayers money?

It astounds me that people look at the issues and say "Option A saves only half of what Option B would save, but A is clearly a good idea that will save money! Woohoo, look, saving money!" The dollar coin is a far better option if looking at it from a cost/benefit perspective. Cancelling the note in favor of the dollar is the true cost saver.

If and when the supply is critically low THEN strike more I like this idea, but we will probably find that supply running out rather fast. There is no need to quit minting the Native American dollars.

I didn't know they were still making those things anyway. I don't know anyone that saves, uses or even mentions them.
