Hi there everyone. I have recently purchased a hoard of threepence's, 850+, along with some other sets/coins as well. Can someone give me any idea what threepence's should be worth each when buying in bulk (average condition). I know this is a hard question because it will depend on which coins and what condition they are in but I am hoping the wisdom of the forum may be able to help. If anybody wants more information or anything please ask.

Ben, if you don't already have one, a copy of Greg McDonald's 'Australian Coins and Banknotes', would answer a lot of your questions.

G'day Ben, 850+ is a lot of 3d. Lucky you ...
The latter ones, KG6 & QE2, are fairly common, and not expensive.
That said, the mintages vary enormously from year to year: many years had more than 20 million, others had less than 2M, and not much in between.
Metallic content is a factor in price:
Upto 1944, 3d were 92.5% silver.
There were no 3d minted 1945 & '46.
After that, they were only 50% silver.
1910 coins are very popular, because that was the first year of Australian coinage, AND it was the last year of KE7's reign, so that year is a "one-year type", and our Seppo friends would call it a "key date".
1921, 1942, '43, & '51 have mintmarks, but none of the varieties are uncommon.
The ones that stand out are: 1922/21, and 1934/33.
But, as with all coins, the big prices go to the coins in outstanding condition.
Threepences were popular inclusions in Xmas puddings: ancient tradition, so my Mum told me. After 1966, many households kept 3d coins for use in the "plum duff". Anyone finding a "trey" had to hand it to Mum, who exchanged it for a shiny echidna. There was an audit before anyone was permitted to leave the table. The coins were washed in boiling water, and put away for next year.
I've bought a few small hoards of KG6 & Qe2, nowhere near as big as yours, for $0.25 to $0.33 each.
That said, when you've sorted out what you don't want to keep, my collection of KG5 3d has plenty of gaps. You'll have no trouble getting rid of them.

Bulk 3d will usually be post war KG6/QE2 so are 50% silver. Bulk lots are usually just worth bullion value, so weigh them and divide x 2 for weight in silver, roughly.

Early KGV 3d, I've discovered since trying to assemble a full set, are not so easy to come by. Watch for 1942m (no mintmark), 1923 and 1915. These seem to fetch a few dollars even in VG worn grades, if you can find them!

Hey Ben, That's a pretty impressive list. There's a few there that will be worth while grading & hanging on to or re-selling. I have no idea what the bullion value of them would be, but no doubt someone will be able tell you the formula for working it out based on the current price of silver.

Years ago when I still had a memory, I could have worked it out for you, but those days are long gone.

Ben,

I am worried that you will tire yourself out sorting all those coins - so in order to be of assistance, I am offering to take them all and sort them for you! It is possible that during the sorting process some of them might disappear - but that is not unexpected. I give my word that no more than 50% will be lost. Remember, I am here to help!!

Rest in Peace

Is that a jam or a cheese tart?

I would gladly make the same offer snooba did.

Thanks for the offer of helping sort the coins everyone, minus a small fee of course. Maybe next time . I have a bit of a thing with threepences at the moment, not sure why but I love them. Probably because they are also reasonably affordable in low grades
