Quote: I am not sure, Spink lists it as 1602, though I could be wrong. The old JJ North book (English Hammered coinage, 1975) has '2' for 1602-1603. The new Spink catalog (2015) has '2' for jujst 1602. The Coincraft catalog from 2000 also has '2' for 1602 only. Maybe new research between 1975 and 2000 has allowed the experts to narrow down the date range a bit?

Just to be sure that we can continue to move forward, here is a 3 pfennig minted in the German Free City of Muenster. The date is 1602--bring on the 1601s!

@petrus, yes thank you for stating the attribution for that 3 pfennig. Personally, I only use the Saurma reference for German coins before 1500 since Krause seems to admirably cover everything after that date and so I forgot that it was in there too. I'd like to see your 1601, but in the meanwhile, here is mine. It is a 1 schilling from Livonia (Riga). I'm bummed about the edge chips at 12 o'clock, but my cost was only $0.71 when I bought this guy, so I wasn't going to quibble too much. The attribution is Kopicki #8124.

I guess I should hold off posting the 1600 until we see the 1601 from Petrus?

I was thinking that now, since the second edition has caught up to the first and the third is almost in the 16th century, it may be time for a fourth edition.

@pepactonius, I think better to wait until tomorrow (rule 5) Quote: 5. One Year Per Day! This allows for more participation. The change to the next year will occur at Midnight Forum Time (US Eastern Time)

It's already "tomorrow", though, since the 1601 coin was posted yesterday. Coins from 1600 were eligible for posting starting last midnight, along with more 1601s, if I interpret the rules correctly. The problem is that as soon as anyone posts a 1600, that cuts off any more 1601s, except possibly for race conditions where two coins are posted almost simultaneously. I need to hold off with the 1600 until we see the 1601 from Petrus, or someone else posts a 1600.

I was thinking about that the other day. I think I want to wait until this one catches the second. It was getting a bit hectic keeping up with three threads. I like having just the two at one time. Of course, I could be swayed by popular demand.

Either pathway is fine with me. I'm holding out hope of finding a 1491 at some point and having the 2nd thread progress more deeply into the 15th century.
