Considering it's not uncirculated, the fields on both sides exhibit some degree of mirrorlike reflectivity, and devices have decent (although hardly cameo) contrast in this regard. The coin overall is much whiter than it appears in these images, no toning to speak of. However, in the interest of full disclosure, there're definitely hairlines present that ought to render any grade given a "details" qualified one, and makes any assessment as to whether the surfaces at present truly represent the coin's original appearance problematic. My consolation is that this specimen was found in a pawn shop (now defunct) pegged as just VG and priced accordingly, and I don't think there can be any doubt it's way better than that.

I'm actually more interested in an informed opinion as to the die pairing and if any conclusion can be drawn from that as to under whose authority it was struck. It may bear on this that although the obverse die state doesn't appear to be a late one, the "8" nevertheless looks to have some weakness through its middle.

I neglected to point out the evidence of a die clash on the reverse shield -

1861-O-Half

I've done a little research today on the die pairings identified by Randy Wiley and Bill Bugert. I;ve read that of the 14 such, 3 are attributed to antebellum operation of the mint, 7 are associated with the time the mint was under the control of the State of Louisiana, wuth the remaining 5 being indicative of C.S.A. coinage. I can with some confidence eliminate the obverse as being either WB102 or 103, and also the reverse would not appear to be WB104. All of these are from the C.S.A. period, so I'm thinking the probablity for that is very low for my example. However, I simply don't have sufficient information to determine just what die pairing I do have.

Based on the pics I'm not convinced this coin has been cleaned. The luster in the recesses of United are protected from any type of wear so in my opinion not enough to justify a details grade. Due to the lack of detail of the surfaces you speak of they may or may not justify it. Someone needed to take a grading class noting this as VG. I see it at AU55. Nice coin

I'm no expert on the varieties associated with Seated halves but the clash seems to match an example I found on Heritage. http://coins.ha.com/itm/seated-half...a/446-1551.s

AU-Details. Something going on with the surfaces. Still must have been quite a score to pick it up for a VG price.

panzaldi - I'm afraid in the hand, held at just the right angle with adequate magnification & good lighting, the many parallel hairlines just give it away as having been at some point improperly cleaned (although, at the time it was done, it may well not have been considered a compromising procedure). It's not especially heavy-handed or harsh as the coin retains its much of its original appearance overall, but still I can't imagine any reputable grading service not catching it if I can.

MeadowviewCollector - Thank you for that Heritage link. I've neen in contact today with Bill Bugert, and his tentative attribution is also W-08, which would classify this coin as one produced while the mint was under the direction of the State of Louisiana.

Pawn shops don't know what they are doing when it comes to grading.

I have it at AU53. Surfaces appear lightly wiped so I'd peg a details grade as well.
