What's your opinion, fake or not? I think it's a definite fake. Edited by doubleeagle59 02/03/2015 10:33 am

My first guess would be that this cent spent some time in the ground or underwater ..Could you post an "edge on" pic..?

Well, it's an expensive enough coin that counterfeiting it would definitely be worthwhile. The apparent graininess of the surfaces is suspicious. On the other hand, it seems almost too clever by half to add the scratches to it. Is it in hand to weigh it, check for ferrous content, et cetera, or is it being offered for sale somewhere?

I agree with DEVLEC, it looks like it may have been a 'dug' coin.

With the overall graininess, the detail in the Queen's hair around her ear is a bit troubling and the date is looking a bit thin. However, all of this could be potentially caused by environmental damage as others have mentioned. Since my expertise lies with US coins, I cannot make a definitive judgement, and I shall have to defer to those who are more familiar with the series.

A few good opinions based on pictures alone have been expresssed so far. The reason(s) for the roughness of the central fields on both sides of the coin have been responsible for the variation of those opinions. Perhaps some other tests should be applied: Weight comparative ring tone accurate physical measurement XRF test for trace metals in the surface of the coin. If it is on ebay, you can't do that. If it is in your possession, or is for head to head sale, you can.

here is the OP's coin next to a other 1858. I would ask you to look at the eye and the eye lids around the eye. also the ear and the locks around the ear. also the top 2 laurel leafs. it does not look the same

The lighting and angle of the two images are also different, remember. It exaggerates the difference in the eyes and the laurels due to shadow and pitch, but if you correct it for perspective and light angle, they're pretty much the same in differing states of wear.
What I don't like is the texture and the lack of detail in parts of the hair. Environmental damage would be harder pressed to do this.
But again, I re-iterate that this is not a series I am familiar with and therefore can only say things provisionally.
