So I'm thinking of making a set of coins that have the same date but are different coins. IE, 1883 Shield Nickel and 1883 Liberty Head Nickel. A 1916 Barber dime and a 1916 Mercury dime. This change of design within a specific year happens every so often, and I think it's pretty cool. I'm wondering if that has a specific name in the coin collecting community? And yes, I'll have to save my pennies for the 1916 quarter set.

Last year The Numismatist ran a series of articles where there were two designs of the same denomination in the same year. There really are not that many but the toughest year are the quarters for 1916 which has the 1916 Barber and the ultra rare 1916 Standing Liberty.

Good luck on the 1913 Liberty nickel if you're going for the whole set!

1839 large cents fit nicely into this theme, there are four types!

My favorite transitions are 1836 bust halves and 1839 bust to seated half. Then there is the 1878 Trade dollar and the 1878 Morgan.

It can also go under the more general name of "Type Set".

Quote: Seems the easiest would be 1909 Indian Head cent and 1909 Wheat cent. I agree, unless you want to spice it up with the San Francisco coins. Sounds like a fun set idea.

Quote: Can't wait to see the 1793 Wreath, 1793 Chain and 1793 Liberty Cap Cents. It would be difficult enough with the 1916 quarters and to try and include these three would require very deep pockets. Your Transition Year Type Set would include all of the coins listed below. An impressive set once completed. Good Luck! 1839 Matron Head & Braided Hair large cents 1857 Large cent & 1857 Indian Head cent1909 Indian Head & Lincoln cents 1865 Three Cents, silver & nickel 1883 Shield & Liberty nickels1837 Capped Bust & Liberty Seated half dimes1837 Capped Bust & Liberty Seated dimes1916 Barber & Mercury dimes1838 Capped Bust & Liberty Seated quarters1916 Barber & Standing Liberty quarters1839 Capped Bust & Liberty Seated half dollars (With Drapery, the No Drapery being a one year type in my opinion would not be the one to include, or do both) 1878 Trade & Morgan dollars1921 Morgan & Peace dollars

Quote: Would the 1921 Morgan and Peace dollars fall under this? Yes, indeed! In fact the story behind why either of those coins exist makes the pairing all the more interesting!
