"Picked" this 1888-O and am having difficulty determining which flavor of "Oval O" it happens to be. All thoughts would be greatly appreciated. PG

I think you have a VAM-17 there.

I was thinking VAM2 die1, VAM5 or VAM18 based on the date position. All use the same reverse die and the PUPs for the obverse die are too small to detect on your photos, PG.

Date position rules out VAM17 LC. There is no line inside the nostril (VAM2), I'm not seeing the doubling of the "1" for VAM 5.... Sigh.... All VAMs need to be BU with no toning to enable certain ident!! PG

Yes there is Dave. Strong doubling on the outside bottom of the second "8". Makes it a VAM-18 eh? PG

Roger on the VAM18... I think it would grade XF (Details) due to a scratch or two that might be deemed over the top for normal wear.... Still... There aren't many of these floating around it appears from the census... I'm working on an 88-O set and this one might fit in the mix.... PG

That 88-O can be a tough set if you're going for all the sub VAMs but from what I recall you have a pretty good start. Keep us posted.

I see a wide, vertical bar at the bottom of the eagle's chest. Is that a die feature or the result of post mint damage? Looks like it might have been produced by someone carving two parallel grooves.

Paleo, I know the feeling.

I've often thought the protected areas of "LIBERTY" were an underused asset. The biggest problem is that it isn't included in the data base. Too small to identify a coin in an online auction, but online pictures might help identify a coin in hand.
