Very nice coin. I'm not very skilled at grading, but it's a very nice example! Eager to hear how much you paid!

VF+ details/corroded.
It is a very nice example. These are tough to find original.

1814 plain 4 S-295 with heavy porosity. Before I grade and attribute this coin I have to warn you I'm a member of Early American Copper and we are very strict when it comes to grading copper coins. I'll give it F-15 sharpness but the porosity kills it. So I'll have to downgrade it 2 full grades for that giving this coin a net grade of VG-10. It is the most common of the Classic Head large cents and has a rarity of R.1. So my grade and attribution for this coin is: 1814 S-295 R.1 15/10. As far as price I'd be willing to pay $60 to $75 for this coin. What did it cost you?

I would take it for a type set. I would say it could fetch around $90-100.

Thanks for all the input...I paid too much for this coin but it looks better in hand and I couldn't afford a problem free example

I don't think you're too far behind the real-world power curve on this one. It won't quite make VF Details in a slab (market graded) where that price is justified but it's only a grade short and easily Fine detail (again, market graded). Now, here's the Pro Tip, the dirty little secret about Early Copper which is unique to that niche and nobody seems to realize: Buy Early Copper from the experts. Celticsoul is precisely right from an EAC standpoint, right down to EAC value. He'd sell you that coin for half what you paid, because as an EAC expert he'd only have paid $75 for it. And that's the secret - that market is developed and extensive. There are EAC guys out there selling copper for percentages of what it goes for on ebay and Heritage in slabs. It's like a parallel market, and nothing else like it exists in numismatics. Buy Early US copper from the experts.

Quote: Ouch. Yes, but it's below VF Details market in a PCGS slab. Whether that's realistic or not, it's what they go for - I'm pulling my numbers from real-world sales and correcting for outliers.
