Hello, Is there any chance this might be a 1864L? If so do you think it's worth buying? Pictures are sellers pics. Thanks in advance! Edited by canary01 02/15/2015 11:41 am

The 1864 L has a pointed bust, so if I had to guess I would say it is an L. But with so much wear and corrosion I cannot tell for sure. And, no, I would not waste my money on this coin. It is too damaged. You can get a nice 1864 L in good condition for $10-$20.

It appears that this has a pointed bust which would make it an 1864 L but I wouldn't put its value over $10. For an 1864 L to get a premium the L must show. For the L to show it really has to be VG or better. Pass on this coin and wait for one that looks better and has an L that shows.

I agree with what others have said. This 1864-L is a cull (damaged) coin worth only a dollar or two. Pass on it.

As I always say, don't settle. Save your change and get one you'll be happy with.

How much are you willing to pay for it in that condition? I think it is worth a low percentage of the G price.

I'd only take that one if the seller paid me to take it. You can find much, much better ones everywhere.

If it is cheap and you want to fill a hole why not. Or maybe you want one for your Whitman book that you don't mind keeping it less protected? Could be worse, you could buy something over-priced and over-graded there are a lot more of those. Or even worse, pick up a fake. I am looking at the prices on Numismedia and a good coin lists for $50. If you can get it for $20 that would be a good price. At what grade do you see the "L"? Numismedia lists that coin at $270. What if it came in a lot with nicer coins you paid $1 or less a piece?

Well I just learned something new, I'd never heard of the pointed bust before now. I had always looked for the "L" which I've never found.

And for those of you way too discerning to pay $3 for it might I recommend an MS 64 full set at the low price of $160,000.00

No it is not one of my coins but some say things about my coins but I do not care, especially if it is something out of a cull lot.
