Lambecolin: Do you know the history of the coin? Hard to tell
without having the coin in hand.Maybe PCGS thought the coin had
been cleaned and artificially retoned.
I purchased a raw 1948 Dollar about 10yrs ago at auction that
had similar toning. I thought it had a solid chance to go 62/63.
PCGS body bagged it.
I knew the history of the coin as it came from a collection of
world crowns that had been put together over 30yrs ago. The
individual keep his coins at home in 2x2 paper envelopes. I
purchased a few other toned world crowns from the same
collection and they were graded by PCGS without a problem.
The auctioneer offered me a complete refund but I
passed.
Fast forward to a couple of years ago.I resubmitted the
coin again(raw). It came back as genuine not gradable.
Well I cracked it out and sold it raw at auction for
$1400+ I would not be surprised to see the coin in a
TPG mint state holder down the road.
If you have been at this for any length of time it can
be a love/hate relationship with the
TPG's at times.
