People have asked about the different ways to disply their coins and I decided on an interesting, yet functional way to display them ( no it is not the coin toilet seat! )

I was thinking about making a clock using different coins in the number positions. The clock body would be a round blank of wood and the coins would be set into their positions around the face. Each coin would be in a cointain or some other type of holder to prtect it from the moisture in the wood.

My thoughts were to use the following coins in these positions:

12 - Dollar Coin
1 - Cent
2 - Two Cent
3 - Three Cent
4 - ?
5 - Nickel
6 - Half ( for the half hr)
7 - ?
8 - ?
9 - Quarter ( for the quarter hr)
10 - Dime
11 - ?

Ok, so this is where I need the help. What coins do I use in the 4,7, 8, and 11 positions?

Are you only using US coinage?

It could contain non US coins, but maybe the date of a coin could be used as well, 1904, 1907, 1908, and 1911 ?

Personally I favor this for the 12 spot (12 1/2 centimos)
I-Need-Help-W/-A-Project
I would stick with the 1-3 posed by collect4fun
However this could be a fun #2 (2 pfennig would also work or 2 filler from Hungary or two Swiss Rappen)
I-Need-Help-W/-A-Project
This one for the #4 (four pence) - I also like GO's suggestions for 4
I-Need-Help-W/-A-Project
Nickel for 5 is good
Sixpence for 6 (I like the half too though - if your doing halves you could also do something like a 1/2 sheqel)
I-Need-Help-W/-A-Project
7 - ?
8 Reales - again, I also like GO's option
I-Need-Help-W/-A-Project
9 - ?
10 - Personally I like a barber
I-Need-Help-W/-A-Project
11 - Maybe some kind of damaged coin with an ike and a penny fused together?

I don't know if it's possible but personally I think it would be cooler if all the coins either had the number for the hour that they represent or if they were all representative of the minutes (5,10, 15). I personally don't like the mix as much.

I also think it would be neat if it could be done with each coin from a different country...again I don't know if that's possible.

I'll have to peek through my world coin book some and see if I can't come up with some more but those are what I can think of off the top of my head.

Many possibilities, however, size is of a little importance. For example why worry about utilizing coins that DON'T represent the time? Just use something that everyone would recognize. The Roman Numeral System.
1. 1 Cent
2. 2 Cents side by side
3. 3 Cents if there is room
4. 1 Cent before a Nickel
5. 1 Nickel
6. 1 Nickel followed by a Cent
7. 1 Nickel followed by 2 Cents
8. 1 Nickel folled by 3 Cents
9. 1 Cent before a Dime
10. Naturally a Dime
11. 1 Dime followed by a Cent
12. 1 Dime followed by 2 Cents.

As I said there may be a size restriction so a Nickel with 3 Cents may be a little large but they could be grouped with a Nickel and the 3 Cents bunched together. Easily translated by most people without thinking. If lack of room is important, the coins could be placed so that one is slightly on top of the other. Example is the Nickel ane the cents would be slightly overlapping to the right so the coins would still be visible but not as much room taken.
Of course to simplify this a 2 Cent or 3 Cent coin could be used where multiples of a Cent is required. The problem with that is a person would have to get up close to figure out what they are. Not to many people know what a 2, 3, 20 cent coin is. Many have never seen a half dollar.
