this penny is wider than usual because of an extra edge? why is it like this?

It almost looks like there is a bezel around the coin. It looks like there was a chain attached up there by the top of Lincolns head.

Sure looks like it. Notice where the chain/loop would be fitted- just so that Abe's image is right-side-up.

You guys have it right. The coin is encased in a bezel that has had the small ring used to attach it to something broken off.

I have seen these before. I believe they were for charm bracelets. I seem to recall seeing one that was even gold plated as well.

I've seen different rim marks on coins that people remove from a good luck holder on a coin. It is worth more in the holder than removed. Why, the rim gets distorted when you remove it or is already distorted when put into the holder. So leave them in. Otherwise it becomes a cull Cent when removed. But I believe the answer on the above coin is the correct assumption.
