There were about a dozen coins and the 1973 was the most polished(ruined),I'm too scared to look at the 1888 IHC,lets just say that the others were hmmm shiny.Rule 1..do not clean the coins.I learned that many many coins ago.

I always told my parents not to clean any antiques or coins. Again and again and try to impressed upon on them how this could ruin them. I bought cleaned and toned dirty walkers and told them how much more they were worth in original shape.

At least you will have a really good story to tell other family members, for many many years.

WHY, just WHY would anyone clean coins. were the coins even dirty its people like your mom that are the reason why coins are cleaned at all and if that was my mom I don't think I would ever see her again. And yet things like this will keep happening and in decades you wont be able to find a certain coin that haven't been cleaned by someone like your mom, "oh look the coin is dirty, I will improve its value by cleaning it even if it doesn't need to be cleaned". It amazes me what kind of crap people come up with that makes so many hobby's pay in a negative way in return. I don't want to call your mom stupid but well, GR58, the coins are cleaned now forever and will never ever be in there original state again. to have a story to tell your family at a coins expense like that just is not worth it.

Ha, that reminds me of an older lady that saves wheat cents for me. The first time she found one for me and put it in my hands, then proceeded to tell me she took a pencil eraser and cleaned it up. I just smiled and thanked her for saving it for me. I walked away then pouted. She still saves for me. I havnt seen her do it to any other coins, thankfully.
Anyway sorry to hear about those coins. That sucks.

Loopy, that's why the CCF exists, to educate. Live and learn. Your mom just received an education. That in and of itself is valuable :-)

Is there anyone that has actually never cleaned a coin? That is a bummer. I'm still lamenting cleaning the Seated Liberty dime I found in my backyard when I was 12.

I've never cleaned one, I don't see the big deal in it as far as collectors lowering the price simply because you brushed away dead skin cells and grime from a perfectly good coin. It's like there's unspoken rules in gold and baseball, and here's another one.... in coin collecting of all things. Unless you know about coins, people think clean is good. My favorites are the little small dealers that say their coin hasn't been cleaned, say a Morgan or what not, and I look at it and see the dirt and grime in between the lettering nad stuf. Whatever... I guess it cleans off the "mystique" the coin had if it could actually speak to you? It's kind of amusing to me.

I remember in kindergarten cleaning pennies to make them shiny. We dipped them in vinegar then rubbed them with a "magic cleaning towel." They did come out very shiny. I don't remember if I kept those pennies or not. Luckily, I don't think they were any coins of value.

If all coins were cleaned I would need to look for another hobby. What I want people to realize is that once they are cleaned they are cleaned and can not be uncleaned, on top of that they are dis continued and are collectible so if a coin gets cleaned there no turning back and only a certain number of what ever coins left.
