After another lengthy hiatus, I once again got the bug to start looking at sets of Mercury dimes on ebay. Must have been really good timing, because I bought 2 sets that contributed a bunch of coins to my set. Without going into too much detail ... One set had no fewer than 16 full on MS coins, and a bunch of AUs. The 1925-D in this picture is one of those. There was also a MS 31-S in this set, and an AU 20-S, and an AU 23-S. I bought the set for about what the 25-D is worth. It amazes me that nobody asked for better pictures of the set in a week. It ran a full week, ended, and when it was re-listed, I did ask for better pics. I made the seller an offer that was a bit higher than his asking price if he would take it from the public eye while I gathered a bit more cash. He did ... I did ... and it was a great buy. Actually ...the 24-S and all 3 1925issues came from this same set. They look horribly cleaned, and the philly one has been, but the other 2 while perhaps dipped at some point, are much more "natural" in appearance than the photo suggests. Then another set had a 18-D and 18-S in AU, and all of the semi key dates in better than average condition. There were only 39 coins in the collection, which would make a lot of more seasoned collectors not even look at the set. It was "the right 39 coins" though. There were several other AUs in that set too. Not a great picture of the 25-D ... but it retains much mint luster and is so painfully close to FSB. Yes I saw that set in my searching but I'm not working on completing the few coins that I have in my set I started years ago. I'm glad it looks better in hand than the photo's also its amazing that they are what you needed. Very happy for you. Welcome back!

Thanks .... I'm working on getting some better pics of the 25-D. I just put fresh batteries in the camera, but I have to change lighting schemes.

That is interesting that you are able to cherry pick from sets, that are selling on the Internet.
Can I ask what you do with the other coins in the sets.
I am not asking ...because I want them.
I am curious if you are able to recover much of the purchase price, by re-selling the coins you don't need.
The set you did post ..to me looks like there are a couple nice looking coins.
I do think that 25D would be very good looking ... In hand

I have done relatively well reselling sets on ebay. There are times when I've actually made money reselling the sets, but most of the time I come close to recouping my investment. The trick is not to pay too much for the set to begin with...unless you're comfortable with the amount you'll have invested in the selections you keep. If I end up with a hundred dollar bill in a 25-D in AU-55, I can live with that. I'm trying to photograph a set tonight, but the lighting is so tricky, and its critical to get good pictures if you want to be able to sell them for anything above scrap price. It ends up being far more affordable to build a nice set this way, than by buying individual coins, though its certainly a lot more work. I went through my stock of extras tonight, specifically sorting out FSB specimens, and plugged 6 of those into my set. I keep the extra early and middle years AUs in an album for now. I have nearly 80 stashed away that way. I'll probably sell some of those individually when I get the time. Chance

Sounds like you are doing very well.
I keep telling myself I should start selling some of my extra's, but I can see it would be a lot of work.

I think I'm doing OK ... though I'm better at buying than I am at selling. I made my best silver purchase in a while a few weeks ago, 76.00 face for less than 10:1. There w nothing significant in the lot, just a bunch of pocket change album collections from the 60s, but over 50 different walkers, 32 different Franklin half dollars, 101 Washington quarters and 116 dimes, mixed mercury and roosevelt. I like buying those kind of accumulations, especially when they're offered below melt. Chance

I'm jealous. I've got over 3,000 Mercury dimes. 12 full Albums of those. Set #1 is just 6 coins short of all FSB. Maybe one of these days I'll put some on ebay. Just to many sets. Your lucky to get so many in such great shape. Congrad's on that deal.

I've been wondering where you've been. I suspect I'm the one who ought to be envious. 3000 dimes is a lot of dimes.
I didn't think that I'd find any sets with upgrades after the last one since my set is looking pretty nice ... and never even thought I'd find a 25-D in high grade. I keep looking anyway. I'll have to be the luckiest guy on the planet to fill the 16-D slot with the coin I want.

Quote: I suspect I'm the one who ought to be envious. 3000 dimes is a lot of dimes. Actually well over 3,000. Lost track a long time ago. What I'm really proud of those is my 16D with FSB's. I keep buying any piles of them hoping to find more with FSB's. Your doing great too though.

@ just carl- I will gladly take a set off your hands to free up some room. Not to get off topic, but just how many sets of all series do you have? Don't you have 9 or 10 Buffalo nickel sets too? Impressive.
