Another Morgan I received last week. I spotted some heavy die polish lines and some cool die cracks and thought this should be a fairly easy attribution. I was wrong, but I think I've got this one as VAM-6 die 1.

Looks to be uncirculated but a very weak strike and/or advanced die state. Sort of conveys an attitude in New Orleans during that last year of, "Let's just crank the required number out and be done with it." PCGS certified it appears. MS61?

Yeah, The strike quality is dismal but many varieties are only available as such. PCGS called it 62 (it doesn't look quite as bad in hand)

Will they give o's an ms grade with that much flatness? I mean if slight flatness prevents a 65 won't this severity nullify it from Ms consideration?

My guess is its slabbed as an error? Grease strike through at face and claw/arrow feathers maybe unless that's just severly weak strike areas?

A flat strike will never negate an MS designation on a legitimate uncirculated Morgan. It will only lower the ceiling.

1904-O is just one of the date/ mint marks that I pay attention to because of all the interesting VAM's.

Ah, I see. Ya I like em because I seem to find beautifully toned ones with good strikes. I love colorful morgans and they seem not to dissapoint when found

VAM 6.1 it is. Reverse was used first on the 2A and again on the 12 before going to 6.1. Upper tail file marks are like a finger print. The obverse is distinguishable by the date position and flag doubling on the 1.
I had hoped to discourage others from collecting '04-Os for reasons of personal greed. I don't even want them interested. But it isn't working. The series has color, clashes, cracks, polish, gouges and doubling. They're easy to find and rather inexpensive. If word ever gets out, I'll not be able to corner the market.
I love to see them, bring out the next one!

Thanks Chute72. I actually spotted the reverse on the 2A plate photos and actually read the descriptions (always as a last resort) and chased the reverse die to the VAM-6 listing. That's what I call entertainment...
