Wasn't sure how to title this thread.

I am thinking if I had wheat cents, I would get responses saying how much fun it will be to sort through them.

If the coins were Ike dollars I am sure I would get at least
one positive response.

But my sickness is State Quarters. This bunch pushes me above 9000 Washington quarters. Of those over 500 and
silver/silver proof.

For me I find it ...funny that some have no problem having thousands of wheat cents .. but have a dislike for clad quarters. Never did a poll .. but it feels like there are
about 50/50 here .. that like or hate State Quarters.

Also I find it ironic that most know this site likes to
encourage young collectors. And State Quarters might be
be the most fun and easiest for a young collector to put
together.

Here is a picture of some of the coins I just got.
Not all .. there also were two date folders and some
gold plated year sets.

I culled out about 500 of this new bunch, trying to keep only better grade coins. It was funny taking the culls to
the bank. At my bank, the tellers take the coins into a
back room, to the coin counting machine. I heard her dump
the quarters into the machine, then she came back and said
"some of your quarters are yellow, are they real?"
I guess she has not seen gold plated quarters before.

When State Quarters first came out I stated saving them from circulation. Then my friends starting saving them for me, etc. It kinda got out of hand, as I ended up with 40,000 State Quarters! Due to the weight and having to move I eventually took them to the bank with a coin machine and watched as the staff removed the filled quarter bags one after another. They didn't fuss much though. Fortunately my house was on a concrete slab floor.

Nice collection GR58! What is the method to your madness? Are you putting together sets, or grabbing anything over a certain grab? Or just getting any State Quarter you can get your hands on?

Personally, I don't really "hoard" any particular coin. But I am putting together a standard date and mint mark set of clad quarters. I have nothing against collecting clad at all.

I've a nearly complete P&D set including territories & parks, missing about 3 coins total. Still if I see any exceptionally nice ones or trip across a proof, I'll slide it into my shirt pocket & put it head-2-head with the same one in my album. All are from circulation.

I have a process where I cull out the lower grade coins.
Some of the early State Quarter years, it is harder to find
nicer P and D coins. With the coins I just picked up over
half will not make it to my roll boxes.

I also like Dansco albums. I know I have three complete P/D/S/S silver complete, and a few P and D albums.

I have this idea of putting rolls of Satin finish coins together. But not sure if I want to purchase 300 mint sets and break them all open ... just to build rolls. Although I do have a lot of mint sets I have not broken open yet .. so would have a good start on the madness.

A local coin shop owner thinks I should cash in most of
the quarters .. and buy silver .. I wish he would not have
said that ... because it does sound like a smart idea.

But I always fall back to .. I really like State Quarters.

I see the pictures were a couple years old

Here is a couple from 10 minutes ago.

I try to label the rolls as I get the new ones.
The green labels are for P and D ATB's. The red
are for ATB "S" mint.
(Have to say wife makes the labels, if I am nice to her)

Of course the white labels are State Quarters.

Impressive collection and photos!

(playing devil's advocate below sorry)

However didn't you just post a few weeks ago that you regretted that your collection albeit extensive had relatively few higher-end "trophy/centerpiece" coins? Now I doubt that State Quarter money would go very far in purchasing that high-end coin you are seeking but it would certainly help in starting to save for one.

Anyways as long as you're enjoying yourself it doesn't really matter how you collect. Just thought I would bring it up for the sake of debate. Hope that you aren't offended too badly.

I am sure you are right, pretty sure I have mentioned
that I would like some higher end coins in my collection.

My income level is not where I can out and purchase $1000
coins just because I have a want. I have to do some planning
for it.

I have been putting a lot of thought into which type of "better" coins I would like to acquire. My situation
is that I have been buying most of my coins, the past
couple years and a few local coin shops. So many times
I am buying coins based on what they have.

These quarters were not the only coins I bought last week.
I also bought a bust dime, 1840 large cent and a seated
quarter. And since one of my goals this year is to put away
more silver, I picked up a couple ASE's and this years 1oz
silver elephant. Also a 1959 and 1960 proof set are still
sitting on my desk, I think I have those already .. so not
sure why I bought them either.

State Quarters give me the distraction I need, when better
coins are not available to me locally. I feel it is ok
to put the quarters away, when I am only paying face for
them. It is like putting cash away just in coin and not
folding money.

Back to your point .. you are right I should be putting a
a few more better coins away.

How can anyone complain when it is so well organized? The difference between a hoard and a collection is organization.
