Maybe worth getting a type set of small cents for markers or mileposts as you go backwards in time.
It should not be hard to buy bulk cents on line to begin with, if you are not too worried about condition. Try emailing a few CRH'ers of U.S. cents, here in the CCF, who may be able to keep a few that would otherwise be destined for return to the bank. That would be a good way to start your collection U.S. cents going.
A bit hard to CRH American Cents, if you live in Canada!
How about CRH'ing Canadian nickels for instance, and swapping your discards with U.S. cent CRH'ers? on perhaps a one for five basis?

I'd be thinking of coin roll hunting for Lincoln Memorial Cents, and possibly to start out otherwise by buying a bag of Wheat Cents, which are readily available, even Amazon has various vendors of these. See: http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&pag...at%20pennies Not necessarily a recommendation as to where the best deal might be had, you could also shop ebay or online coin dealers direct.

I would be glad to help. I have some old folders that are partially filled I could send up north if you would like. Problem is I'm at college and they're back home. Let me know if you're interested. I have a lot of wheat cents in there as well. No key dates but I'd be willing to sell you them for fairly cheap if interested.

and good luck with your U.S. cent collection! By the way, there are a lot of U.S.-based members here that don't have a 2015 cent yet!

For a new member, understanding that we cater to new collectors in a hobby where fraud is rampant, the reason we do not allow new members email is so they can't contact existing members. And we're going to remove any email published in the Forum, because this place is indexed by Google and we don't want the spammers that published emails being here. Not to mention the person posting that email really doesn't want to be on 5,000 spam lists.

Thank you Dave, as far as offering to sell to a newer member I totally didn't check and we haven't been in contact beyond my post above. Just wanted to clear that up. Dropped the ball there in my eagerness to help. Aero, I would strongly suggest purchasing a Red Book to help you learn a lot of basic and indepth details about US coins.

I can understand the security measures in place to portect the forums and its members.
please read my original post I was not asking tto buy any coins or contacting members to buy any I simply just wanted to know a good format on how to collect them in a book.
Being such a wonderful forum a few members stepped up and offered to give me collection a boost thats all.

Back in the 1960s most began a collection with Whitman Folders. $0.35 just about in every stationary store. Divided by the years: 1) 1909 to 1940 2) 1941 to present Fast forward to today: 1) 1909 to 1958 (Commonly called Wheat Pennies) 2) 1959 to present (Lincoln Memorial Reverse) With the new 'Shield' Reverse the second group is not as cut-and-dry as it used to be.
Your initial plan to start with 2015 and work backwards makes sense. As you discover which dates and mints are difficult to locate you'll be in a better position to ask the CCF members why this is so.
A set from 2015 back to 1940 is quite a reasonable target to shoot for. Long term. A set from 1959 to 2015 -- the best place to focus.
Especially for a Canadian who no longer has many cents to search from pocket change. The Lincoln collectors here will assist in giving you which dates are problematic. The 1955-S was very problematic back when I was a lad!
Good luck!

Yes...AeR0 I had forgotten about the waiting period. Be patient, read, participate and learn from these great guys and gals and the time will fly by. I added you to my friend list and will save this folder for you. It's not full but it is an extra one I am not going to finish. Also, check your settings and make sure the option to receive email from members is turned on and I will be back in touch at a later date
