Fascinating, I have seen one or two of these coins and I always thought it was some sort of random oddball copper bezel.

What an imagination they had. Who would have thought of putting those two items together to make a "coin" the size of a quarter?

Smart, but not smart when you get caught, haha.

Still, an interesting piece of history.

Very cool! When did vending machines start checking coins for electrical conductivity though? I remember reading that War Nickels included the Manganese so that they wouldn't be rejected by nickel vending machines.

Neat little piece of history nonetheless! How many did they make and spend before they were caught?

This is what I find interesting.

Why not do the old "string & quarter"? Drill a hole through the quarter, attach string, buy cigarettes, take back quarter.

This has the added benefits of no evidence & not having to make 100's of them. Although... in a crowded area I could see how these could be more discreet. No one watching you tugging on a string & all.
