Poll Question
I always wondered this because at school, other students are careless with their money and I find a lot on the ground, especially in the cafeteria. I have made over $80 in the past 4 months from doing this. If you do, what is the lowest denomination you will pick up?

I always pick up pennies! One little story: On the last day of school last year, one of my friends found a $100 bill on the ground in the middle of the street!

Kids are often careless because they didn't have to earn the money. It is just like with taxes, it is easy to talk about taxes when you don't own much. There is a reason so many college students are for higher taxes. Then they get out in the world and start to own things, a house, a car, etc. try to make a living and raise a family off their income, etc.
I always pick a coin up off the ground, even a cent. Never now what you might find. If it is nothing special it just goes in the change can and I take it in to the bank once a year or so.

The first day of class in one of my Economics classes in college the prof asked if we would pick up a penny off the sidewalk. He started on the far side of the room and got an answer from each student. When he got to me I answered Every single time. A young lady on the other side of the room Said What the h**l for it isn't worth anything. I answered It only takes 100 to make a dollar.
Thr prof said that I was a true economist and I answered no, just someone who has had to make their own way for 20 years. Her thinking will change in a few years.

You needed one more item. Would not or could not pick up a coin. I mention this due to many operations makes it really tuff for me to even bend over to pick up anything.

I always pick up any coin. You never know, it might be a rare date, mis-strike or an improvement on the one in my collection!

Anything, but my choice was 'Penny'.
Some will say you're losing money (time spent) by picking up a penny. But I lose plenty of money in other more frivolous ways, so I always stop to pick up a penny (or any other money).

I will personally pick up coins off the ground.. heck it's free money!
On a side note a crazy story... I once worked at one high school where the night shift custodial cleaning staff member would clean the entire school.. (approx pop. of school was 2500 per year)... This guy picked up every coin... after 40 years of working in the same school and pretty much in the same job .. he retired...
The guy ended up buying a small fishing plane... the majority of the money used was money he had found over the years... all of it was in buckets in his house... he had buckets of silver coins...

I'd pick up any coin on the ground, regardless of how ruined or worthless it is. I voted penny because, foreign coins are always interesting

I pick up a lot of coins in Walmart and places like that. They just go in my coin hunting bag and get returned to a bank to be counted within two weeks. I keep a positive income on the CRH when I dump at a bank even though I take a lot out. It makes it so much easier.

Tryna, I know a person just like the one you mentioned. It's also a girl at my school, and the last time I talked to her, it went like this:
Me: (checks coin return of vending machine) Friend: Did you find anything? Me: Nope. Girl: Why do you even check the coin return? You know that there'll be nothing in there. Me: That's not true, I actually found a quarter in that exact machine last week. Her: So what? A quarter's not even worth that much. Me: You only need 4 to make a dollar, I've made over 70 bucks from picking up dropped change. Her: I don't believe you. Me: Hey, you can think what you want, but I'm telling the truth. Her (under her breath): Whatever. He can waste his time by doing that...
Something tells me that girl won't be very good with managing money, especially if she thinks quarters are worthless...

I pick up every coin, but rarely see coins laying on the ground here. At springs there are better possibilities to find coins as snow melts off and coins comes visible after few months.

Yes. As a user of a metal detector you develop an eye for the roundness and "smaller than you think" size of coins to speed up recovery once you dig a plug and are looking to see if the coin is in or out of the hole. That size judging thing helps to zero-in on coins at a distance when walking. Some joker at the local hardware store super-glues cents to the sidewalk out front to see the reaction of folks who stoop and stumble looking sheepish. I think the best comeback would be to ask to test out a sledge hammer for a minute, and then return it once the coin is loose, saying the hammer doesn't fit after all. I want my retriever dog to help out along these lines by the way. I heard about a fellow who trained a dog from puppyhood to play with chew toys stuffed with shredded currency, available from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing gift shop and on-line. Simply stuff dog toys with bits of shredded bills and the puppy will be sniffing for "toys" happy to bring you currency. Of course you can play the game of hiding dollar bills in the couch cushions and get really happy when the dog brings you one. Then at ball fields, rest stops, and fair grounds simply walk the dog along fence lines for the payoff of loose bills and wallets. It could work!

Well nowadays, picking up a penny is no big deal. There's not much you can do with it. But as a little kid, it was a BIG deal. It always guaranteed a trip to the candy store to peruse the glass case and pick out my favorite piece of penny candy. Anyone remember those days ?
