Does anyone believe that they will take the "edge lettering" off of the new Presidential dollars ? I've heard there are Congressmen complaining of that and petetions to put it back on the "FACE" of the coin. If they do that at some point, WOW !! Then all of the naysayers of the "repackaged" dollar coins (proof and uncirculated) would be scampering to buy all they could to make their money ! Reguardless....... I still just hoard, but that would be very interesting to change a coin like that !

I think they were talking about it when they were having so many problems with the edge lettering but since the "errors" have pretty much stopped being released from the mint I haven't heard anything else about it and they probably will keep it on the edge since the mint has finally got everything corrected

Yeah, they're talking about it.
Some folks feel it's too important to put on the side of the coin, out of the way and some feel the lettering is too hard too read and I guess others at the mint don't want to deal with the hassle anymore but who knows what is going to happen.
I kinda wonder if they don't manufacture a few of these errors, as well as controversies like this, to get attention for the small dollar.

I agree with you TSOTL, you have to figure they know that if they mess up just one little coin it can end up being worth a huge sum of money. And as we can see with all the new Presidential dollar packaging all the mint really seems to care about doing is making MORE money.

I agree with Bryan, there have been less and less problems with the edge lettering. Its still possible to have a few dollars released without edge lettering, but I think that number will continue to be really small.

Personally I think they should get rid of it totally. It is over 200 years since the govt said that they should get out of religion, why should people have to have religious items on their coins?

IGWT is not a religious statement as it appears on our coins ,,it is the motto of the United States .
But in response to the question ,, there is nothing in the works to remove the motto from the edge of the coins ,, the thought never got past the discussion stage ,,
once again the late night shop at home folks have managed to promote this as an active on going event ,,when in reality its not happening .
Instead they (congress ) have decided to change the reverse of Sack dollar every year ,, will this make the ones with an eagle as the original a highly sought after collectable coin ?
Keep in mind folks that the 2008 coins are more than likely already being struck ! no change in 2008 .

Not only that but on those new Sac dollars the inscriptions including the religious motto IGWT are going to be moving TO THE EDGE! (And it may be the countries motto , but I still see it as a religious statement as well, and I think you will find that most people view it that way as well.) quote: I've heard there are Congressmen complaining of that and petetions to put it back on the "FACE" of the coin. Why? They can't really do anything now until 2009, so that means a two year type with a mintage of what 2.4 BILLION coins? Even divided between eight designs that is still 300 million coins or one coin for every single man, woman, and child in the country for each design. And almost all of them in MS condition. Of course there are always fools out there that you can sell common things to for realy stupid money. The home shopping programs have proven that.

Well, there arent "1" BILLION of "any" DOLLAR coin ever minted that I can find, and I didn't know that the mintage numbers were released in the same first year of any coin ever. Even the State Quarters NEVER had a mintage of 1 BILLION coins, So, forgive me if I'm wrong, but I don't know where the 2.4 BILLION mintage number from you comes from. The Mint knows that there is never going to be a "circulating dollar" used in everyday transactions...... IT JUST AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN ! So why would they ever make THAT MANY OF THEM ! My bank still has two giant bags full of thousands of dollars of the Sacajewea's..... they can't give them away...... they offered them to me on more than occasion, but I don't want "circulated" Sac's or the Presidential dollars as far as that goes. And you know, I don't really disagree with your annoyance over the mint, their products, their "re-packaging" of everything numerous different ways, so on and so forth......... I can just say that I'm excited by possibilities and I LOVE COINS ! LOVE EM ALL ! If some of the "newer" stuff ends up not being what I'd hoped in a few years....... VERY EASY to get rid of ! VERY EASY !

Reread the first three sentences of my last post. 300 million coins of 4 designs per year is 1.2 billion coins. Times two years is 2.4 billion coins. So as a "type" (edge lettered dollar) you are lookin at up to 2.4 billion cons for the type. If you want to break it down into 8 types, one for each president it is around 300 million for each design. One coin of each design for every man, woman, and child in the country. Buy them up to make money?
As for why make so many of them, I don't know , stupidity maybe. After the 330 million Washingtons failed to circulate why did they strike almost 300 million Adams? Then with those filling the vaults here come another batch of Jeffersons. Now with close to 900 million non-circulating president coins here come the Madisons. If they produce hem like the first three you are looking at 1,200 million dollar coins that are not circulating and not needed at all.

I really hope that your not taking to much of this info personal ?
You are far from alone in your collecting style ,,there are hundreds of thousands of folks that collect the ultra modern coins.
I have my proof sets and a few chosen commems which are part of my collection and also the to date coins for the denom sets .
Im also building sets of SQ's and President dollars for my Grand kids ,,they are very young and those sets being what they are if they take the coins out and spend them its an oh well instead of a you have to be kidding me ! feeling ! But they may spark an interest in collecting and that is the purpose of them at least in my world .
everyone collects different but the advice to move into the classics is sound advice as an addition to what you already collect .

Well thank you, that's a little comforting ! And I "do" collect the classics..... BELIEVE ME ! That is "most" of my collection. My oldest coin is in the 1820's. I have many Large Cents, Two Cents, Three Cents. I have more Morgans than I can count ! Many Peace dollars, a HUGE pile of Buffalo nickels (most dates readable) many many many Indian Head pennies (80-130) (civil war dates "and" low grade) Seated coinage, Fraklins, Bust, Barbers (all denominations)......... I HAVE A LITTLE OF EVERYTHING ! It's just that I was really excited, for once, to get "started" on a new series ! I missed the quarters, so I didn't want to miss the next thing that came down the pike and I went "hoarding crazy" with at least the first year of these Presidential dollars...... the other years (16 year program I believe) I was just going to manintain my two books and get one "D" mint roll each. The first year I got 4 "D" mint each and 4 "P" mint each (P mint I had to order from the Mint too @ xtra cost!) So I just didn't want to believe that these are worthless and in 35 years would STILL BE WORTHLESS !........ DIDN'T WANT TO BELIEVE THAT AT ALL ! My first real chance to start at the "beginning" of a new program like the quarters....... I WASN'T GOING TO SCREW THIS UP AND MISS THE OPPORTUNITY THIS TIME !

well they aren't worthless, each of them are still worth a dollar and in 35 years they will still be worth atleast a dollar. That should make you feel a little better because they will always be worth atleast face value but as you have heard from others I don't really see these coins ever being worth HUGE money not even in 35 years but even if they happen to be worth 1.50 in 35 years your $800.00 of Presidential coins is then worth $1200.00 but since these haven't ever circulated there will be alot of these in 35 years from now in super high grades so even graded coins in the MS-67-MS-69 level will be cheap to collect for future generations. People look at classic coins and see what they are worth now and think that all the new modern coins that come out will have the same effect and its just not reality because most people that could afford to keep coins from circulating were few and far between so alot of the coins are in circulated grades and the ones that were kept in pristine condition are very hard to find for some years and mint marks but with todays coins it seems everyone is collecting/hoarding these new series of coins and that will stop their value from appreciating anytime in the near future. This is not true for each different coin the mint makes because there are some coins that have been released recently that have made huge leaps and bounds in value like the 2006 20th anniversary ASE set, they sold for 100 bucks for the whole set and now sell in the 300-400 dollar range but these types of anomaly's don't happen very often and when they do there are usually people that speculate they will do well and have the foresight to buy all they can when they can (I bought 20 sets and gave a bunch away at Christmas time and now everyone is super happy because they got a gift worth 3-400 dollars even though it only cost me 100). The 1995-W ASE is another coin that has gone up in value over the years, the reason being is it was only available in the set with the Gold Eagles and nowhere else so that one coin sells now for more than the whole set of coins cost in 1995
