So I was thinking... Being my first new year as a collector, I was wondering how I would go about collecting the new 2008 coins. Just like any new year, I'm sure there are things people will buy up, sell later in the year. So my question is, what are you doing to prepare for the new 2008 coins, or how do you like to start out each year? Do you like to buy coins from banks instead of the mint? Hoard rolls? So many options it seems. I'd like to make 2008 a successful year as a collector. I guess I could ask if you did anything in particular for the new 2007? Just poking around for some tips from this wonderful community!

the us mint website http://www.usmint.gov/index.cfm?flash=yes is very useful if you're interested in purchasing sets, individual coins, rolls or bags. and they have a subscription service (on the left side of the products page here: http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...alogId=10001 that you can use that reminds you ~30 days before a new item is released. the mint and proof sets are less expensive here than at some online places. I'm not sure about rolls and bags of coins.

i just read the subscriptions thread started by lucifer. he makes a good point - the postage can add up when multiple subscriptions get filled at different times in the year. still, if you want to be sure you get these coins this is the best way to go. good luck!

Its not so much the best way to get them, I'm more after which ones I'm going to buy and which ones I will not. 2008 gives me the chance to see how the coins come out for the first time and I do not want to go on a buying frenzy without a plan... Maybe I'm just confusing everone :)

I think it depends on what your collecting. As for me I've used the mint subscription option to ensure I get the proof set, silver proof set, silver State Quarter set, uncirculated set, ASE proof, and uncirculated ASE. Those are the moderns I like to collect and it leaves me more than enough money to buy other coins off ebay and any other mint coins, like commemoratives, that come out down the road. I generally don't get into hoarding entire rolls of coins, but I do search rolls all year long. Hope that helps get your plan started!?

For me, I just wait for the common stuff to arrive at the banks and get them then. I don't get any proofs but if I were going to i'd probably get them from a coin show.

There are some "smart" strong opinions on why "not" to hoard the Presidential dollars. Sadly for me, I went crazy this first year on them ! Not going to do that for the rest of the program for sure now ! 2008 will be the last year for the old Lincoln Penny I've heard, they're going to change it to show Lincoln in different perspectives for at least a year.

There are people who "collect" rolls... typically we get them from banks and we trade w/ people from other places for different mint. For the Presidential Program, I bought the first Washington roll at coin show, but then latter, I just get the other 3 presidents from banks (West Coast only have D mint mark, so I trade with people on East Coast for P mint mark and we pay postage for it, which is cheaper than buying directly from the mint) Which mean: Your first option is to get mint rolls from the banks and then trade with others for those that you don't have (P mint vs D mint). For those that is not circulating, those selling by the Mint (Proof/Mint/Legacy/Silver Proof sets, ASE, ASE Proof.... etc), then you have to either buy them from the Mint or from coins show. I wait and buy all my sets from the Mint at the end of the year so that I only have to pay shipping 1 time only; the disadvantage is that the Mint may run-out of them.... we'll see.

I have not bought single mint rolls from my bank yet. When will I know to go to the bank and buy some? When they first arrive on the mint website, will they be available then in banks? And how do you know that roll is all mint / year you want? I seem to think when I ask for a roll I'm going to get a mixed circulated roll.

I've always bought what I like and it changes from time to time. I've always liked to have a Silver Eagle, Mint sets to give to kids and to fill books, Proof sets and Silver Proof sets for me. I also buy a few rolls (1$, 1/2$ & State Quarter rolls - all the rolls are 1 each mint mark). Don't go crazy - IMO, I'd rather have a few great coins than a thousand so-so coins.
