A recent acquisition. From the standpoint of wear, this is probably AU but it has some bizarre environmental damage to the cap side (technically the reverse).

Still, I like these on account of the characteristic and unique details they exhibit in this era before the adoption of standardized dies for all the mints. In the case of Hermosillo, this can manifest itself in the incorportion of minute detail into the snake's body, while in contrast in this instance, the rendition of the eagle's breast feathers is rather simplified and stylized, not unlike many modern Mexican issues.

A quirk of this specimen can be seen with respect to the mintmark, where the 'o' above the "H" is stamped sideways, and low enough that it slightly impinges upon the lower character.

Incidentally, for 1871 only Hermosillo, Alamos, and Chihuahua struck the 8 reales denomination, as the other mints had been tasked with producing its supposed replacement, the soon to be abandoned "balance scale" peso.

What a great coin! I love this series for the great variety that it has. I am just starting to acquire a really nice example from each of the 14 mints.
Very interesting that the sideways "o" in the mintmark appears to be placed over a much smaller "o" such as the one above "M" in the Mo mintmark. This variety with the "o" over "o" is listed on the Resplandores book by Dunigan. Great obverse but what do you think caused that damage on the cap side? Possible land burial?

You're correct that the large sideways "O" appears to be a repunch over another properly oriented and appropriately sized one. As for the odd discoloration (it borders on corrosion), I just have no idea why. With the eagle side being so nearly pristine, neither burial nor immersion would thus seem to be viable explanations.

Not understand why had this meaningless re-punch. Do anyone know the reason?

The mint mark was applied with TWO punches. The position of the O above the H was very variable and horizontal over vertical small o is an importatnt variation for mint mark collectors. It is specifically mentioned in Dunigan's book.
