What are your thoughts about selling bullion from your stash to buy other coins you want/need? Is this a wise decision?

I was just thinking about the same thing an hour ago. In my case I want to acquire some classic coins I have always wanted but in EF or better condition. I am thinking of selling off some junk silver dime rolls to have the cash for my purchases.
Good luck.

It depends on the spread of premium between bullion and coins, right now.
For example, if silver bullion's premium is about $1.5 per oz; silver coins' premium is about $3.5 per oz. Then the price spread is $2. The question then becomes, was this spread higher or lower at the time when you purchased bullion? If the spread was higher, then your thought is wise.

Two ways of selling bullion: 1.) to a bullion dealer then using the cash to buy something else, 2.) if it is numismatic coins you wish to buy with the proceeds, investigate the deals with a coin dealer.

I've occasionally sold to "refocus" in other areas. I figure if I'm selling at lower silver markets than I'm also buying at these low prices so it sort of washes each other out ie: just sold some 90% halves and War Nickels to buy mercs

I was thinking of buying many non-silver Canadian coins I need with the proceeds from the bullion. I'm a bit torn...

Seeing as how I bought most of my bullion when prices were a lot higher than they are now, I don't think it would be that great of an idea for me to do this. If silver and gold values ever go back up, however, I can certainly see it as simply exchanging one investment for another.

I have exchanged it a lot this year. Newer silver junk coins 40% halves and 90% kennedies found at face for older ones like some barbers and Seated halves. I have gotten one old barber and three Seated halves out of a bunch of them. I lost maybe a ounce of silver in the transactions but I was able to pay with it with halves I got for $7 at a bank. I think trading bullion is relatively easy right now just depends on how you got the silver.

If I decided to sell my 8 ounces of silver bullion on ebay, would it be better to list them separately or all together? Set a fixed price or start them at .99 cents to start and see where the bidding goes?

If you start at .99 you take the risk of it ending much lower then you would like, best thing is figure out the lowest you are prepared to take and put that price as your starting price in an auction. Remember that ebay takes 10% fees without a store and papal takes 2.5 % fees or some such. So add 13% to what the min amount you are willing to take. Another problem is that shipping with tracking is not cheap in Canada, $10 to $14 and even move if shipping to USA with tracking. Might be easier to sell all 8 at once , and ship with tracking, It would be next to impossible to sell a 1 oz silver bullion coin and charge $15 shipping, but with 8 1 oz as a lot would be easier to sell with the high shipping/tracking rate. Or maybe sell 4 1 oz lots might work ok as well. Oh wait your in the USA oh well, I guess your shipping rates are much cheaper. If you ship without tracking you could lose the coin/s and have to pay the money back as well since you will not be covered by sellers protection through paypal.

If you are going to sell your bullion, why don't you sell it locally? Then you don't have to worry about fees or shipping. We have a couple local listings that are great for selling stuff like that.

Just put an add in craigslist or kijiji or what ever and sell it locally.. save the shipping fees and worries and all issues.. As for selling bullion... bullion is simply an internationally recognized form of cash that needs no currency conversion. Great for a lot of purposes... but at no point in time am I ever attached to silver in any sentimental way... buy/sell when it suits my needs. Good luck

I am more concerned about if selling it at a jeweler or coin shop that I might just get "spot" price and not any numismatic premium.

Are you looking to sell rounds or 90%? I've never sold any of my rounds/ASE/maples, but I've sold 35, 40 & 90%. I figure my LCS sells at 15/1 and checking out what it was selling for on ebay 15-17/1 seems to be regular. The 90% I just sold for close to 15 to 1 (cost $2-3 to ship- I think it estimated I needed 5 oz postage and free tracking through eBay/PayPal. I was a little disappointed that it didn't go higher, but most was not best looking CRH finds- and at same time already won a merc dime auction of similar FV but higher quality for more of a premium. In terms of ASE it appears you can get 5 for around $100 on ebay with free shipping, so if you were selling at that rate you'd probably get $130-140 after shipping/fees. I've never sold non junk on ebay, so numeristic value obviously depends on supply/demand- check what similar auctions have been ending at.

Side note: I'm no seasoned seller. Just happened to recently do the same thing.
