my bank told me the probably wont be getting me any more halves after next week because it costs them money. What should I say to that? I have a decent amount of money deposited in their bank, should I expect them to? I need advice, I don't want to push to hard and burn a bridge and don't want to just accept it.

I rotate orders between two banks to keep the presure off any particular one.
If they won't give you halves then give them some, make it your new dump bank.

this is the only bank that will order them for me, and they specifically said they dont want them back. Do you get your halves from banks you have accounts with?

Yes, I use the same bank but go to two different branches to pick them up. I also have token accounts at my dump banks so they dont complain that I'm not a customer.

I get my boxes from one bank but will take them back to 3 seperate branches locations that way one doesn't get bombarded with them all.

Great finds Don and Chuckster!

I just went through 2 Brinks boxes and only found 1 1976 S proof. The last couple of weeks have been a dry spell for silver. I can't wait to get a few walkers or franklins in a box. Has anyone else seen their numbers decrease in the last few weeks? Probably because many more people are searchig with the value of silver being high. Anyways, I'm anxious to see what tomorrow may bring in the next two boxes.

Some banks are funny. Some bend over backwards for their customers, and some act like they could care less if you take your business elsewhere. I opened an account at a bank because they said they would order halves for me. After 1 box, the manager refused to let the teller order me more. I immediately made them my dump bank and shortly after received a letter requesting that I close my account or they would do it for me. The next bank I opened an account up at was more than happy to order me halves. In fact I hadn't gotten any in awhile and one day last week I was running a couple of hundred of dollars in nickels through the Coinstar and the teller asked me if I wanted her to order me some halves! I've also found another bank that keeps halves in their vault for some of their customers. I occasionally run out there and grab a box. I've found that if you spend a couple of months visiting just about any bank asking for loose halves, they get used to seeing you and assume that you are a customer. I get alot of boxes of nickels from banks that I don't have an account with.

Today I picked up 4 rolls and 4 loose halves from a bank in a grocery store and ended up with 2-90% and 8-40%. That's my single biggest haul in months. I also got a 1962 silver quarter from the 4 rolls I bought today.

Great finds

A question maybe XoG can answer, how much does it actually cost the bank to order a box of halves?

I believe it's a percentage of the dollar amount. Yesterday I got a box of nickels from a bank that I regularly stop at and the teller told me that she's supposed to charge me $5.00 but she wasn't going to. I've never paid a surcharge for any of the coin I've got. The bank that refused to order me halves told me that they had to pay for the boxes of coin they got in. I asked how much and offered to pay the charge but they (even the manager) couldn't tell me how much the charge was. They said that it was handled at the main office.

It depends on the cash handleing (such as Brinks) service the bank uses. Usually with larger banks this isn't a problem as they have contracts with the cash handling services to make weekly orders of coin. Smaller banks though may not always have a contract and thus only order coin on an as need basis which means they would be charged extra for everybox ordered.

Just went thru 2 boxes from Wells:
Box 1 - 1 66 and a rough 82 Proof
Box 2 - 2 67, 1 68 and a beauuuuuutiful 74 proof

1 more box awaits me tomorrow. May hit some other banks to pick up some loose rolls. My best finds come from bank rolls...

When am I going to get a box like some of you where you find 40 pieces of silver.

Does anyone here record a history of where you go, what you get, date you got it, etc etc?

I hit 3 more banks today and came away with $41 of copper nickel.

That's 0/10 this week. Let's see if I can get a world record for getting skunked!
