I sell my 40 and 90% halves (for a little under spot) and then use that money to by 1 oz or 5 oz bars of .999. Just my Two Cents. |

I like the idea of buying bars. I would actuallyl ike to get one bigger bar just to have one, lol. Not directly for investment or anything. More as a novelty.

I have not read a lot of this post .. it is so large. Every time I do it is pretty interesting. I picked up part of a collection today that has about $250 in clad halves. They were pulled out of change in the 70 - 80's. Newest is 1991. The 90% silver I bought couple of months ago. On my first pass thru the halves (There are other coins too) I found 24 40%'er. My questions are. Do you all look for other years, like the 1982 and 1983. And which one (year/mint) has the no FG variety. What are the chances of finding a DDO / DDR, or should the queestion be what years are best to look for them. I bet these question have been answered before .. but this post is huge .. 167 pages. Thank you in advance for any help. |

I only look for silver, proofs and the NIFC (not intended for circulation)coins, of which I only keep the best ones. The errors in my opinion are not worth the time. Some here do look for errors like the no FG but I dont think there is a big market for these error types if you are wanting to sell them. This of course is just my opinion.

I like AGCoinHunter look for silver, proofs and NIFC (now I know what that means..was bugging me) also the 1987's recently I started separating the 74's and look for the DDO's. I keep mangled damaged or holed coins just because. other than that I am trying to fill my books. |

AGcoinhunter and MattDrew Thank you for your input. I have been thinking of buying a couple boxes from the mint. I think getting this group will make me want to more. I think I will stick along the lines you two are. Save the silver and any others that have a value over face. I like putting the 82 and 83 coins away because there was no mint sets issued those years, well only if they look AU or better. I have done this for quarters and cents too. I really did not want to try and find error coins, my eyes are not as good as they use to be. Thanks again |

I broke my run of being skunked on walking into banks with a lonley 69-D. It's got great dark toning on it though. The teller said to me "I hear the Bicentennials are worth a lot, is that true?". I feel bad for doing it but I said yes, only because I will be going back to that bank again and I don't want her cherrypicking the pre-1970s! She can have all the Bicentennials she wants!!

I picked up 16 40% today, mostly from teller trays. One came from a roll.
