JFK Half Dollar Roll Hunters: Silver, Proofs And Other Finds

this is really frustrating me..

1k today =ZILCH

the nf string box I got had about 6 different hunter markings .. yallo marker on the 0 0 of 2001.. red nail polish dots, black x's.. etc...

no one ever has CRW's. but I did score 2 rosies from $350 in dimes..

Sounds like there are some decent finds out there lately. I went through 2 Loomis boxes and 1 Brinks in the past week and was skunked on all 3! Hopefully, my luck will change tomorrow with 2 more Loomis boxes.

A bank nearby had $490 in NF String & Sons so I took liberated the bank of these. Zero, zilch, nada, nothing. There were 2 2003-D NIFCs, but I don't bother keeping those. Maybe I should have - they looked pretty nice with hardly a mark. Oh well, no silver in them so I'm not really interested.

When I search half dollars I really only look for silver. However, circulated proof coins do tend to show up form time to time, and I always keep them. I think the impaired proof coins look pretty neat when you have a pile of them.

Some people on the forum like to look for varieties, such as the 1974-D DDO, and others look for the tough-to-find years where very few halves were minted, relative to other years. These are known as NIFC (not intended for circulation), and coins that were made in 1970, 1987, and all years after 2002 qualify as NIFC. I personally don't really look for these, but I know quite a few people hang onto them. I know these aren't the only non-silver varieties that people look for, but these are the ones that come to mind.

Commemorative halves also happen to show up. Just a month ago I found a Civil War Battlefield commemorative proof and an 1893 Columbian Exposition commemorative.

As for selling the silver that you find, I always call around to the coin shops in my area to find the best offer. In my experience, coin shops are usually very consistent in whay they pay for 90% silver coins. Coin shops can vary widely, however, in their offers for 40% silver halves from 1965-1970. If you're not happy with what the coin shops are offering, there's always ebay or the buy-sell-trade forum here (once you hit 250 posts and wait 3 months).

I ended my silver-less streak at four boxes today. A loomis box I searched turned up 3 40%, 1 1964, 1 1942 Walker. I love the look of opening a roll and seeing a worn rimmed silver coin. You always know it is either a Walker or Franklin.

Well, I had a BLAST today.

I had to drive all the way across the state of Iowa for a meeting at 10:30 this morning. After my meeting I started hitting banks, as I knew I wouldn't be home until after work hours any way. Picked up a couple $10 rolls from my first few banks along with a couple $2-10 loose pickups. Then I scored...I got off the beat and path to hit a small town bank, they had $180 in a bag in the bottom of the counter. She says we need to run these through to make sure the count is right...no more than 30 seconds later she walks over to me with a 1968 and says "this is the sound silver makes isn't it?" as she drops it on the counter; I grin and say, "Yup, that's it." She says "looks like there are a few of them in there." That $180 had 17 of 40%'ers. Next I go to a couple that didn't have any and then found one that had $520 in a bag...I only had $380 left, so I say I'll take $380...then change my mind and say let me hit your ATM; I'll take them all. I forgot I had already capped out my ATM for the day. So change my mind and say I'll take the $380. She then tries to run them through their counter...it jams. They're busy so she says "can you come back tomorrow?" Well...I couldn't...so with my tail between my legs off I go looking for more halves.

Down the street I go - AHA! a Wells Fargo...that's MY bank. So in I go to dump what I've got and get some more $$$$.

I go back and get the whole $520...boy am I glad I did. That $520 yielded 54 40% and 1 - 90% JFK. Picked up another $500 later on and only pulled 3 more.

I ended my day with 76 keepers!
