For me the $1000 bags are the only way that banks can get halves. For pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters all banks around here have the String and Son boxes. But for halves, they can only get $1000 bags.
I have a standing order with a local bank for 2 bags every Tuesday. The bags come straight from the Fed in Dallas, and what's great about the bags is that the originating bank's name and address is usually written on the outside of the bag. So, I've had bags from all over Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. It's just a total crapshoot when it comes to where the bags will come from. Some weeks I've picked up two bags that came from my dump bank, while other weeks I'll get one bag from a Bank of America branch in Dallas and the other comes from a small bank in Durant, OK. It's kind of cool to track where the bags come from.
So, I hope this helps a little. There's really no skill or strategy involved. The way I look at it is that the more halves you go through, the more chances you have to get lucky and be the first one to get to the bag that contains someone's collection that was unknowingly cashed in. It's a little disappointing when the bags come from my dump bank, but I'm totally willing to put up with those bags so that I still have a chance to get to the freshly dumped, unsearched halves.

Im guessing that the bank you order from is a smaller company, they probably order most of their coin from the fed rather than a cash logistics company.

Stopped by a local bank on the way into work. The teller had two rolls of halves under his counter. One was an unopened 2006D roll in the original US Mint wrapper. The other was a String & Sons roll. To my surprise, the String & Sons roll contained a '64.
Sometimes I "throw back" the NIFCs, but I probably will keep this roll.
Stopped in another branch and they had no rolls, but 4 envelopes each containing $10 worth of halves. Among them were 4-40% halves. Not bad for a couple of quick stops.

Thanks Tkachukdude7. I spoke with the local Fed office today to find how to order bags. They told me that they deliver to the holding companies (Brinks, Dunbar etc.) in bags, and that those companies then roll them. I also tried to get the bags directly from them but was politely told that they stopped servicing individuals - in other words no.
My bank uses Dunbar. They roll the halves before delivering. Evidently, it makes them easier to deliver. Maybe I need to search around for a bank that can order the bags from their carrier.

Went to the bank last friday, I asked if they had any rolls of halves I could look at (i got 6 Franklins a week ago). She had 3 rolls. The first one was no good, the second and third rolls were all Franklins with 1 1964!  They didnt have any CWR of dimes or quarters... I immediately asked after.  Edited by Namachieli

Hit up fourteen banks today. The first twelve gave me a grand total of about $31 in loose halves. No silver. (No Ikes available, either.)
Lucky 13 (I believe it now!) at first was reluctant to give me anything, but it was obvious they had *something*. The manager told the teller "they didn't have to worry about the halves", and said that her boss had picked up some "mixed dollars" earlier in the day. Turned out the halves she "didn't worry about" were all silver! I walked out of there with 35 Franklins (1 roll plus loose) and a smile on my face. :-)
(One of the coins was tarnished and she dropped it and asked aloud if it was the silver after hearing the "clang". I just told her it was a dented, damaged coin :-) hahah what she doesn't know won't hurt her!

hey ianmprice - I just noticed your Franklin haul trumps mine, so congrats! Can't believe such quantities of obviously "different looking" coins are so easy to obtain.

So, today I looked through 4 CWRs of halves... No silver (big surprise), but there were only one or two new dates.. Most of the halves were 1971s or beat up 2000-P's...
