I have been getting boxes of pennies from my bank each week but I had the courage to ask them about ordering Kennedy halves. First she said, I don't think we can get Kennedys. She asked if Kennedys were an old coin or what. At first I thought she was kidding but in fact, she didn't know the name of the person on the face of the 50 cent piece. Once I educated here, she told me she would call the vault. She thought that the boxes were $1k per box so I told her I would buy 2. When I arrived at the bank, she told me that she could in fact order boxes of Kennedy's and that they were $500 a box and she would order me 4 boxes. She had no problem with this so I am thinking about asking her to order 4 boxes a week. I guess I should order these from every bank I can. |

It's great that you found a bank to order boxes for you---many people can't. I don't want to discourage you, but I would be careful about how many boxes you order until you find a SURE source of dumping the searched boxes. Keep these things in mind---most banks won't take them in loose, so you will have to re-roll them or find a bank that has a coin counter and open an account. Make SURE that you never, ever return the searched coins back to the same bank---trust me, they won't like it or appreciate it---so you have to find a different bank and open an account, lest they won't take them. Remember, too, that 4 boxes are going to weigh right at 100 pounds--another reason that dumping is harder than ordering. I can tell by the reaction of tellers at my dump bank that they hate to see me coming because they have to deal with 5000 coins---and they have no coin counter, so I bring them in re-rolled---and they tell me that they have to take them out and count each coin in each roll. Not something that I would enjoy either. Lastly, if you have to re-roll, you'll have to find a source for a LOT of wrappers---I go through 250 of them a week---and the banks may or may not have that many---or like giving them away, since it costs them money. They sell no Yuengling west of Ohio. :( It is indeed tasty stuff. They only started selling it where I live about 2-3 years ago. Before that we would always grab a few 12ers on road trips and keep them in the fridge. Funny how their distribution works. |

YES! Went through a box of $500. Got THREE 1964's in ok condition!!! Finally got something! Gonna be a good week! I feel it...

AG - congrats on the haul and the Lager (a favourite of mine also). I've yet to find a source for the $1000 bags.

Snagged two '76S silver proof halves today, as well as five Mint rolls of NIFC halves: 01D 06P 07P 08D 09D ebay prices are pretty weak for those rolls, so I wonder if they're even worth holding to. Same with the 06 P&D set of nickel rolls I found a few months ago. For the first time, I met other silver hunters "in the wild" - ironically, I met two within 15 minutes of one another! Both were in line next to me, and the time I was ahead of the other hunter was when I snagged the silver! :-) She (yup, a she) showed me what her day's haul was... a Peace dollar and a heavily handled '00 Silver Eagle, as well as a handful of 40%. If only I had started on the other side of the strip! The weird thing was (as I learned when I doubled back over banks she said she'd hit) was that she only asked for rolls. Although she didn't miss out on any silver, she did miss out twice on loose halves. One bank gave me coins that apparently had been withheld from the other hunter because she was asking for a confusing type of coins. Remember, people: ASK SLOWLY AND CLEARLY! Or else others might capitalize when the teller holds out on you!! |

I was driving along in an area of town where I was not aware there were any bank branches. Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a teachers' credit union. So I turned around and went inside to ask for halves. To my surprise, the teller said there were $390 worth in the vault. I bought them all. Ten were CWR and "date marked" with dates from the 70s through the 90s. Fifteen rolls were CWR in wrappers bearing the name of a local bank that merged out of existince about 20 years ago. (I thought that was a good sign.) One was a Brinks roll and the other 13 were worn but unopened String & Sons rolls that looked to be several years old. Total silver halves: 2 - 1953 Ben 1 - 1964 21 - 40% late 60s Suprisingly, both the Franklins were in String & Sons rolls, in separate rolls. Otherwise, the silver was fairly well distributed between the S&S rolls and the non-dated CWR. Suprisingly, I found one 40% half in one of the dated rolls. (The date of that one was not listed on the roll, so it must have slipped in.) I also picked up a Eisenhower dollar someone had made into a necklace by drilling out a small hole at the top. The lanyard was still attached. |

Picked up my two boxes from the bank today. They get the flat boxes with the yellow writing on them. Lately I've been finding 10 to 20 40%ers in $1000.00 worth. Well I noticed the printing on the boxes looked like a new font or design, so I had a feeling my streak might be up. I opened the box to find that instead of the yellow and white rolls I usually get, they were brown and white like the ones that come in the square boxes. Just as I feared, two skunks. No keepers of any kind. I did find a lot of marked coins that had black or blue marker that had " J 5/07 " written on them. Hope I find my streak again soon.

Not half dollar silver but I picked a 1964 canadian quarter from my till yesterday. didnt even notice it till I handed a guy 75 cents back in change and he had that in the change. he asked if I could get him a quarter instead of the canadian and thats when I looked at it. I then said well I'm gonna keep this anyway cause it silver jokingly and he asked If I was serious and looked a little depressed LOL.

I was just looking at the following document, http://www.gao.gov/new.items/d08401.pdf, and particularly "Appendix IV: Average Days of Payable Coin Inventory, by Reserve Bank District and Coin Denomination," which begins at p.45. The half dollar inventory among the different federal reserve districts appears to vary widely, from an almost 4-year inventory in the New York distict down to an inventory of only about 200 days in San Francisco and Kansas City. Wouldn't that mean bags from the New York branch would be more likely to contain silver than the KC and SF branches, because of less inventory turnover and, consequently, less searching of the inventory? Is there any evidence that bank roll searchers in New York have better luck than searchers in the KC and SF areas? I apologize in advance if this has been discussed before. If so, I missed the thread. |

Ferdyboy, thanks for that info. I completely forgot that I needed wrappers and I have none on-hand. I will either have to find some locally or get some ordered online. As far as the searched coin, This lady I'm dealing with at the bank is the teller manager and when I told her that I could take the boxes to a different bank when I was done searching them, she quickly replied that she will be happy to take them back. I don't think I will do that every week because I think that could still be an annoyance but I was happy to hear that nonetheless.

johnstac, no matter what the tellers tell you. do NOT bring your halves back. make an effort to find a dump bank. it will go a lot further with the tellers if you aren't ordering and dumping with the same people.

Picked up 10 rolls today from a different bank than the one I get my boxes from. No silver. This is 4 weeks in a row that I have found nothing in their coins. They get the square boxes with the white and brown wrappers. They use to have silver in them, but not anymore. And now the flat boxes I order are coming with brown and white rolls instead of the yellow and white they use to have. No silver in those either. Which boxes do you guys have better luck with?

The box isn't the issue. It's just luck my friend. Some times you get lucky sometimes you don't. People can say this type of box is better... But the truth of the matter is the vault that rolls the coins got the in a 1k bag. The bag got filled by someone dumping there old half collection into a coin machine or depositing them. I have gone much longer than 4 weeks with no silver. I think I have gone 2 months+ with nothing. I have fun praying this week will be the week and if I get skunked maybe the next box has silver. You got to have fun... It's a hobby.

lovethatsilver, welcome to what drives us all crazy in this hobby. I have gone months without anything and the next week I hit it big. Its most likely luck of the draw. You can do some things to help yourself out if you pay attention. I figured out that I got more AG out of certain types of delivery. Talked to my bank and they accommodated my request. Keep your eyes open and think about what others here are telling you and you can figure it out too. Unless you are in my fed district... :)
