JFK Half Dollar Roll Hunters: Silver, Proofs And Other Finds

1@ 90%- a 1964P JFK and 5 @ 40%.

A little slow at work today, so I left a little early and took a long route home. I hit about 10 banks for halves. I had no luck at nine of them. But the other bank I almost missed because I didn't see it from the road until I was in the intersection. I decided to turn around, which was not easy since it was rush hour on a Friday near an interstate on-ramp. The teller I ended up with said she had 8 rolls. She pulled them out of her drawer and they were all wrapped with the same kind of new wrappers. It looked suspiciously like somebody's dump. I decided to buy them, but in the process asked her how she got that many halves at one time. She said, "Some old lady bought in a BUNCH of coins the other day." That made me feel a lot better. I opened them in the car. Out of 8 rolls, there were 59 40% Kennedys. Of course, I went back in and asked if they had any rolls of quarters from the coins the old lady had bought in. They said they did not. Anyway, I considered it a good day and the end of a really good week.

As an aside, I wonder how there could be 59 40%-ers and no 90s. I think some tellers know to look for pre-1965 coins, but don't know about the later 40s.

Remember a lot of people just do not think that coins have value above their face. This is especially true amongst younger people even though many of them should know better. Even the odd color or the strange sound of a silver coin will not be noticed by many people these days unless they have experience with numismatic coins.

This is why it is so important for family members to talk to each other. If grandpa or grandma have coins let them know you will help them to make sure they do not just take them to the bank without being searched first. Remember many of these coins may have been stashed from back before silver was removed from circulation. To many old folks these are the coins they have had lying around for the last 50 years and nothing more.

For those of us who do understand numismatics we need to remind our spouses and children that the coins in the shoe box are not for spending but are instead more valuable than that. I have told my wife that should anything happen to me she is to contact my two coin dealing friends and whichever offers her the more money she should take it. This summer has been very slow for me. Managed to scoop up a measley 10 40% in cwr over the last week. Its hard to believe that since I made my first post over a year ago on this thread there have been 180+ plus new pages added to it. I feel this thread represents a sign of the hard times of our present economy. Hopefully this friendly forum has not created too much new competition out there...

160 in crr and nothing. I agree... More people are roll searching then 2 years ago. Silver is just so hard to come by now. Maybe things will get better as the economy gets better. At least that's what I hope.

I think WHEN it gets better... silver will be even harder to come by b/c people are not longer cashing in old change jars for the $

No silver in at least a few weeks. Have scored some red/blue seal currency and some Ikes, however.

Still not sure what to do with the Mint rolls of nickels (2006) and halves (01+ NIFC) I've found. They seem to have virtually no value.
