I was reminded today why I quit boxes. 2 boxes - 2000 coins - and only 1 silver (a 1964, fortunately).

Then from $11.50 in teller tray coins, 1 x 40%
Then from a single CWR, 1 x 40%.

From my rough calculations over time, I am more likely to get a silver half from a single CWR as from a single bank box.

I have been thinking the same thing. I have searched 9k over 2 months and have found nothing. The boxes I get just plain suck! I find silver ever now and again in crr. I think I'm done with boxes for a long while!

I think the boxes are mostly full of recirculated searcher dumps. It appears to me that a good amount of silver is making it to banks, but between tellers and CWR/teller tray searchers, I think the overwhelming majority of silver halves are picked out before the coins get back to Brinks/Fed/etc.

Coin counting machines! a "DUMPSTERS" best friend! at $1K a pop for Halfs- only 4 trips in 2 days and I'll be done for the week!

Hey, are those the kind in the bank lobby, the self-serve kind? Those are the kind I need to find. The banks I found I can dump free in have the machines behind the counter and that means I have to bother the tellers with the heavy bags.

Oh well, hit those couple of monster boxes, anyway, just for the fun of it, why not?

$120 in CWR from one bank today yielded 26 x 40% (19 in one roll).

$6 in teller tray yielded nothing.

$1 in teller tray yielded a beautiful '63 Franklin. She plopped it down on the counter and it made that telltale silver sound. Franklin's face was pointing right at me. The young lady teller had absolutely no clue; neither the sight or the sound had any effect on her whatsoever. It was just 50c to her.

I got a call from my dump bank today. They wanted to know why lots of half dollars have been deposited on my account. They wanted to know if I was a business, and they advised that they needed to be in compliance with the Patriot Act. I guess my dumps have raised eyebrows.

I told them I am a collector and this is a hobby, so there were no issues. But, just an FYI to you all out there. I guess roll hunting may raise red flags with regard to the Patriot Act.

Nice finds BNA. That is good stuff.

You have exceptional luck with finding silver halfs at banks. I have tried numerous trips looking for halfs at banks, and generally I spend a lot of time and gas only to find a few coins.

Nobis,

Thanks. I've had some good luck lately. Of course, I don't always post about the swings and misses! (There are many.) I think the key is persistence. Both good finds today were from banks that have been total shutouts in the past. Eventually, a good batch of halves is going to come in to any bank and it's just a matter of who comes in first and asks for them. One teller told me today to "always ask." She said it's complely random and unpredictable when halves will come in and then they're usually gone within a few days. Also, I think it's important, as you and others have said before, to be really nice to the tellers. A little small talk and smile may make the difference about whether the teller volunteers to mention the 40 Ikes she got today or the other teller that has 10 rolls, but if off for lunch right now. But certainly, there is a lot of luck involved.

eddiespin:

Yep, they are free standing machines in the lobby. Only time you bother the teller is when the bags get full and have to be replaced with new empty one's etc.
