JFK Half Dollar Roll Hunters: Silver, Proofs And Other Finds

Any of you guys ever get a boxes that have rolls that are short? I have some weird boxes. Some of the rolls are short a coin or two and one is short about six coins. The rolls are wrapped poorly on the ends. However, I have found silver and none are torn, which even the best roll hunters can't avoid.

Do the machines wrap poorly and short rolls sometimes? Do armored carrier employees skim off the top? Not sure what to think or how to handle.

Sooo I began my roll searching today by picking up 9 rolls of halves from a local branch. The teller told me the halves were taken from the coin machine in the lobby. No silvers, but I definitely had fun looking for them. I did find some of the coins were in very good condition and most had some great shine to them, including a 2001, P mint. I looked the coin up in my RedBook and it says it wasnt issued for circulation. Does this mean it was only meant for collectors and proofs? Also, since I'm basically only looking for silver coins in roll searching and I dont have any albums to fill up, would it be wise to just return all the coins back and cash them in to try my luck another day? Thanks for your help.

Who the heck knows? I've had short Fed rolls before, too. I'm sure we all have.

There are proofs and there are business strikes. Proofs aren't issued for circulation. Certain business strikes also aren't issued for circulation. Look in your RedBook to identify the latter. There's some rationale for saving those, most notably the '87s. As you go along, you'll determine whether or not you care to save them. Not all of us save all of them. We save all of our proof finds, though. Some of those, in fact, are minted in 40% silver. All, of course, bear the "S" mint mark. Understand, there, a proof is just a different method of manufacture, which results in a rather glass-like surface, whereas business strikes have what are called "metal flow lines," which impart a different surface. Do a little Internet research, and you'll become familiar with the differences in no time. Aside from those, there are a lot of others that are collectible, basically in the nature of errors or special set coins. That's a piece of it, anyway. Look, good luck!

I dont understand how people would just toss out an old Walker into some change. I know times are tough, but wow. maybe thats just me though, nevertheless nice find chuckster. I just called around to some banks in my area, found one that the lady told me they probably had 200 rolls just sitting in the vault. hmmm, not sure whether to be excited or weary of that. I guess time will tell.

hello all, I'm relatively new to the whole coin collecting business. I've been buying silver eagles for years but that's really the extent of my knowledge.

anyhow, I've recently started going through rolls of half dollars and I didn't have much success--got my first box today (didn't order it, it just happened to be at the bank for some reason) and found absolutely nothing of value in it; however, I did notice that there were sharpie marks on some of the rolls so I'm assuming it was just a dumped box someone already went through?

my question is this: is it even still worth it in 2010 to get your bank to order some boxes of them? thanks.
