What did the marks looks like? There is someone on the forum that marked 5000 coins with a lime olive green sharpie in a diagonal line across the face of the coin from just above "IN GOD" across Kennedy's ear to the "T" in "LIBERTY". He is somewhere in the gulf coast area. |

no the marks were on the rolls themselves, not the coins, in black sharpy.
i found two kinds of marks: 1) an X, 2) a star

i did my first big search of halves today it was only 240 but any other time I can only find a few rolls here and there. I think I had a good search. here is what I found
1961 franklin
2 1968 jfk
3 1968d jfk
1 1969d jfk
1975/1976s
1977s
1979s
1980s
1981s
2006s
and 1993d 1980d that look like they are from mint sets

It COULD be silver. From 1992 to present the mint has struck clad AND silver proofs (S mintmark) each year. You can verify by looking at the edge for no copper layer or weighing it to tell for sure. |

I have very few JFK pieces. Inspired by this thread, I picked up a roll of halves today. Every one of them the Bicentennial coin.  I'm not deterred, just amused. |

I don't sort many halves but last 2 boxes = Skunked, I'm going to try my luck with a couple tomorrow, I guess it couldn't get any worse.

hey would ya'll advise not Ordering the boxes? does the rolling company sort out the silver maybe? I know if I worked for em I would.

Found this in a Roll of $200 along with some others Ill be posting. And I do have the break down date wise just not mint. I sold $100 to my mother all Low 70's I believe. But once I breakdown mints and figures off the rolls at my mothers Ill post results. But in the mean time does anyone know what could of happened to this coin. Ever see another one like it. It has lines that start from one end of the coin that run through the whole coin in complete uniform fashion. Its kind of hard to see they turn out more like dirt marks in scan. But the coin has a smooth chalky feel to it. You cant really see it on the reverse but easily seen with eye. I just noticed the lines wrap around the coin perfectly their kinda at a 2:00 to 8:00 angle off the Obverse then 4 to 10 on Reverse. The color is kind of Grey Scale. Also interesting line in O of Freedom and BUS in Pluribus on Reverse. Thanks For Looking   |

ALL of them ARE proof strikes, however, but not necessarily silver, except for the dates mentioned. Of course, ALL 1964 to 1970 Kennedys are silver, regardless of the mint mark. (The 1964 is 90% silver, the 1965-1970's are 40% silver). There were also SMS (special mint strikes) during these years that are similar to a proof strike and are silver as well. |

I got hooked on collecting Kennedy Half-Dollars when I walked into my local bank and asked for as many halves as they had and I was handed 6 coins, one 1964 the others 1965-1968. Very sweet! I am going to try to get a box as soon as possible and will post what I find. Also, has anyone else had a difficult time trying to convince a spouse that this is not a waste of money :) LOL ... still trying to convince my wife that I am not losing any money :)

Also make it easier on yourself and get into a routine. I search penny rolls and Kennedy rolls. Anything I don't want I take to my local credit union which has a coin counter and has no fees associated with it. Then I cash out and stop by a few banks and obtain Kennedy's. I do a quick parking lot search and re-roll them and drop by a final bank and exchange the Kennedy rolls for Penny rolls. Then I spend the evening/weekend going through the pennies and do it all again the following week.
