At camp some kid had a 1968D he was going around showing everybody. Of course he had no idea what it was worth but said his dad told him it was "rare" and to keep it. I took this as a challenge and decided to get it from him, which I did for $3 Took some convincing though!

Camp counselor should have told a child the value of the coin. Not fair to get a silver coin from a child ho knows only part Of the story. I just don't think its right or on the side of God like signature implies

Last I checked a couple months back 40% retailed for approx 4 bucks on ebay. Probably less at coin shops. Overall the kid got a relatively decent if unspectacular price for his coin for no effort.

Maybe he should have been informed about the melt value but it takes some effort to find a way to sell for those prices.

He didn't get totally ripped off. And as long as both parties are happy, what's wrong?

Oh and if this fighting keeps up this thread may get locked. The mods have threatened it a few times before when people got out of hand on here.... So I kindly suggest that we drop it.

silver is up!
JFK-Half-Dollar-Roll-Hunters:-Silver,-Proofs-And-Other-Finds

3.00 is closer to half price. I was hoping my initial posting was worded such that anyone could see it was not an argument. I am sorry if I offended anyone here. Please Note I took pains to say I was no there and did not know the full situation and, as said, included myself in the same boat as not making the best choices in all situations. I also was not making any emotional statement (seed of arguments), but stated facts.

To me, an important part of our coins is the witness they are to the heritage of this great land. They serve as a reminder to me of what has made America what we are and what we have done for this world.

Wow you really lucked out on these rare collectibles...You should find out who the man is and see if he'd be game to purchase more unique coins. Or maybe the dump means he came to his senses

Hmmmm... I have to admit, when I went through my one and only box of half dollars, in addition to the two 1967s I found, I also found a couple of rolls worth of bicentennials. Which I set aside for keeping. Do they have any value whatsoever over that of a regular clad half dollar in circulation? Even a few cents more?

My wife tried to convince me to hold onto the entire box of halves, on the theory that you rarely see them in circulation these days and therefore may be worth more than face value somewhere down the line. I said that wasn't likely to happen, simply because so many were minted and these were all in circulated condition. And yet... I held onto the bicentennials. Even though they were also minted in vast quantities (probably more so than any other year), I just can't shake the feeling that they are somehow "special." Who knows? Maybe in 50 years...

I think it will take a bit longer then 50years for the bicentennials to have value. I say 2075-2076 they will have some value. By then I will be to old to care.

Earle42 what site do you use for that silver price calculator? I use this one below, but you can only do one denomination at a time:

I just googled for one and, honestly, do not know where the site was as I had reset my browser since I was doing some system cleaning

However, I found another one at the silvercoinstoday website. Just navigate until you find their calculator.

BTW - moderator - if this is not the proper way to mention another website, please let me know how - I want to obey the rules . I know several posts mention APMEX so I guessed this was the best way to make this info available concerning the coin calculator.
